Okay, I've been unhappy with my job for awhile now and today I put in an application for a part time job at a non-profit that I would really enjoy. It pays the same as my current job but the work would be 100 times more meaningful, I'd be stimulated and challenged a lot more and I've always wanted to get into the non-profit field so this would be a great opportunity.
My current job is full time, if I get this second job I would have to cut my hours back to part-time. As far as accomplishing all of my tasks at my present job this shouldn't be a problem, we've been super slow lately and will stay this way until the holidays and I pretty much spend half my day coming up with new things to do (inventory, etc.) even if I just did them a week prior simply because there isn't a great volume of stuff to do. It seems like a waste of time and money for me to keep doing these same things over and over again. Not to mention it's incredibly boring and lonely since I'm the only person in the office all day with my boss and the mail lady making appearances for maybe 20 minutes total out of my 8.5 hour shift. There's no benefits, no sick days, no vacation time, and no where for me to move up to.
I've wanted to get a new job for a long time now. My boss is very nice and very reasonable but I'm not being challenged and I'm just not happy. If I were to get this job (or another part-time job if I don't get this one because I will keep applying) how do you think I should approach this with my current boss?
I don't want to completely leave my job, when we're busy I don't mind the work and my boss is really one of the best I've ever had so I am happy to stay there on a part-time basis, just not for 40+ hours a week. Things will pick up around the holidays but it won't be so busy it couldn't be handled and she was going to hire someone else on part-time to help out with that period anyway at least as a temp so it's not like things will get bogged down once they pick back up again.
