I was told today at my LO's check up that from here going forward I should start to take away the bottles and give him his milk in a sippy cup. And offer it to him with his meals as part of the meal. And then water in between with snacks etc.

Does anyone else do this? Would it really be a mistake if i kept on with the bottles a little bit longer? (another month or so)

What are you doing now with your 1 year olds? Do they get a bottle at bed time? Do they still wake for milk? Do you give a sippy cup now with their meals?

I wont take away her bottles when she is 1. I think its too early....and if I gave her milk in a sippy cup she would never actually get milk....whenever I put anything in the sippy cup she takes it into her mouth and then spits/dribbles it out :/

I started slowly taking the bottle away at 11 months just because he took to a sippy cup so well, by his birthday bottles were history. I don't think it hurts to keep it around longer than a year though.

my son is 16 months old and still has a bottle a day, usually in the morning because he lays quietly on the floor drinking it and it allows me to shower and get ready for the day.

My baby was off bottles by a year; I began weaning her about 11 months. At first she didn't have much success with the sippy cup, but after a few days she was drinking from it like a pro. However, she couldn't figure out how to hold it for a couple of weeks so I had to hold it for her, but she eventually figured it out. :)

My doctor said the same, I have cut back bottles and used sippy cups, but honestly....he wants a freaking bottle at bedtime, so surely 1 won't kill him. It's a slow and long process, but it's better than nothing.

Jonathan is on 1 bottle a day before bed. i will start to wean it maybe next month lol im not going to force him xx

I asked my dr about it at dd one year check up. The dr said the sippy cup is just a bottle with a different type of nipple so don't listen to anyone and if she prefers the bottle then give her the bottle! I'm not worried about it. i know two year olds who still had a bottle or two a day.

Firstly, I changed his morning bottle to milk in sippee cup - it took a few weeks for him to take the whole thing but now he's used to it. If he didn't have much I'd offer him more at lunch time in a sippee cup (even though he normally has 2 bottles a day). I still gave him a bottle at bedtime.
Now a few weeks later I'm taking the bedtime bottle away! Was ok last night and I will continue and hopefully no more bottles from now on.

If they don't take it from a sippee cup yet might prefer a staw cup, jasper loves them x

21 months and were still using a bottle for milk morning and night. I'm not worried in the slightest, he doesn't eat an awful lot and hell only drink milk out of a bottle...( His face is like WTF!!! When I've given him milk in a cup before)....so he really needs the milk he has!
I think it's a comfort thing for him as well.

My niece is over 2 years old and still only drinks from a bottle... Not her fault tho as my sil has never bothered to even introduce a sippy cup. I even got her 2 hello kitty ones for her bday so we will see if anything happens with that.

I'm glad I've got this out of the way as we've got another baby coming, it's easier now I guess as he doesn't really understand. Would be harder if they're asking for a bottle and you'd have to say no.

My LO loves her milk and I've only just got her down to three bottles rather than four! I'm going to start giving her middle one in a cup today I think but whenever I've tried before she just has 2 or 3 sips and then spits everything out so I'm worried she wont have enough. Does anyone know how much milk a one year old should be drinking?

I can see Ciara being like this. Nearly 10 months old now and still on 4 bottles a day at the moment! She doesn't eat much and will only take occasional sips from a sippy cup (with me holding it). So I'm reluctant to cut down her milk in case she then isn't getting enough food or fluid x

I think it's about 16oz-20oz a day, but you can give less milk if they eat cheese and yoghurt etc x

Lily has a bottle first thing in the morning and anther right before bed. Everything else throughout the day is from a cup. I plan to keep this up as long as she takes them. X

Still struggling to take away the bottle at 22 months, but its only used once or twice a day now so im not too worried.

Is it not to do with their teeth? I'm sure I read bottles increase risk of tooth decay, but TBH I've never understood the logic to this, as the bottle goes further back in their mouth than a cup does!

Meh. My daughter will take milk from a sippy but she still loves her cuddles with mum and bottle in the morning and the evening. I'll be lead by her on this one. She's not overly attached to them and i cant see the harm in letting her have them longer than 12 months. If one of the major benefits of extended breastfeeding is meeting the emotional needs of a toddler why should that be any different in a bottle fed baby?

i think the idea is that when you put a baby to bed with a bottle to self settle the milk can pool around the teeth and the sugars in the milk can decay the teeth.
