Heartburn plagues most moms-to-be at some point because progesterone, the hormone that relaxes muscles in pregnancy, also relaxes the stomach valve that keeps acid out of the oesophagus. In addition, the growing uterus crowds the stomach, forcing acid into the oesophagus.
One of the easy ways is to stop drinking liquids with your food, as this dilutes your digestive juices, making them less effective. Instead, stay hydrated by drinking water between meals. Your midwife can prescribe you an antacid, if required. However, remember not to take them at the same time with iron supplements. Antacids can prevent iron from being properly absorbed by your body. Take your antacid at least two hours before or after your iron supplement.
