I had my baby boy on Thursday May23rd 2013 at 7.19am following a 32 hour labour. He weighed a beautiful 9lb 4oz, such a good weight! He was 11 days overdue.
We all know that labour and delivery are painful so I'm not going to dwell on the pain too much - to be honest, I can't even remember the sorest part, it's true, it's a pain you forget the moment you see your baby.
Had my second sweep on Tuesday morning and felt awful all day with flu like symptoms, cramping and backache. Tuesday night about 11.30pm I started having regular cramps but no tightenings so I thought that they couldn't be contractions. After googling my symptoms I realised that there didn't have to be tightenings of the uterus at this point as it was likely to be early labour. I timed them for an hour and they were coming 5 minutes apart lasting 1 minute. I phoned the hospital and they said that they wouldn't worry about the pains I was having... What the fuck!? So I told them I also hadn't felt the baby move in a while as I knew they'd want me to come up. To be honest, I hadn't felt him move much but I was in pain so I wasn't really focusing on it. We went up to Maternity Assessment and I was put on the trace machine. I was so excited that my baby was moving and that my contractions were coming every 3-4 minutes! The midwife said that I looked too calm and glamorous to be in labour but I asked her to examine me and she performed another sweep. That's when things got very intense. I asked to stay the night and was admitted to the ante natal ward as at only 3cm I couldn't go to the labour suite as I wasn't considered to be in established labour.
I got a private room (get in!) and tried to get some rest but I didn't get a wink of sleep. I felt sick and I was in pain. I put on some relaxation/ meditation music (highly recommend) and powered through until the morning. OH came back about 11am the next morning and my contractions seemed to have slowed right down to around every 7 minutes but the midwives were fantastic and explained that I was in latent labour which can suck at times. My blood pressure was slightly high but I was allowed to roam about to try and speed things up. OH left at about 8.30pm and I had a bath to help with the backache. The bath was AMAZING! I can't recommend it enough. I was 4cm dilated and once I got to 5cm I could be transferred to labour suite although I didn't think it would be until the morning so the midwife told me she'd leave to until then to examine me again.
The next part is a blur. I accepted that I'd be getting no sleep as the contractions were very sore by this point and walked about the room to try and cope. All of a sudden, the midwife came in to ask if I was ok. I asked her to examine me which she gladly done as I was squealing by this point. I was 6cm! Finally, things were starting to get good! After 24 hours of being in no mans land, I was so excited to get things going! I phoned OH and was taking to labour suite where I was given 2 codine tablets and gas and air. That stuff was amazing. I felt so drunk!
A few hours passed and I decided that it wouldn't be long based on the pain and pressure I was feeling (haha, I don't even think my waters had broken yet) so I kept telling my OH that it wouldn't be long and telling my midwife that I thought I could do this on gas and air only. When she next examined me I was 7cm. I sooooo thought I would be pushing 10cm. A few minutes passed and I asked for the drugs! The psychological aspect put me in more pain than I was probably in. So I was recommended to have the epidural over diamorphine, which was my birth plan anyway.
The anetegiologist came in and started and this is when things went a little crazy. I became very dehydrated and couldn't urinate. I also thought I was going to be sick so I was hooked up to a fluid drip. I can't really remember much from this part. The epidural wasn't strong enough so he had to come back and keep turning it up. I didn't really like it to be honest but I don't know how I'd have coped without it. I was able to sleep between contractions which was nice.
At 6am the midwife told me to start pushing and said it should take about an hour. I pushed with all my might although I couldn't really feel what I was doing due to the epidural. At 7am the doctor came in and told me if I didn't push him out then he'd be back with forceps. Baby wasn't distressed or anything so I think it was a bit of scaremongering. In about 15 minutes he was out. I pushed far too quickly but the feeling of release and relief meant I just couldn't help it. My baby was perfect. Not dirty, no crying and so big!
I needed quite a few stitches due to 5 second degree tears. Stitches were stingy but nothing too sore.
Overall, it was a lovely experience. We all know it will be sore when the moment comes so its important just to go with the flow and take each contraction/ pain as it comes. Every single midwife who I've dealt with in hospital has been wonderful in her own way and I'm planning on writing to the NHS to congratulate them on their fantastic staff. They really are a credit to the NHS.
My son and I are finding breast feeding difficult. It's very hard and I can understand why many mums give up! But we're determined at the moment as my milk hasn't come through yet. I've had about 6 hours sleep since Tuesday so I really have to nap today! Also, skin to skin is truly amazing!
Welcome to the world Bobby!! Mummy and Daddy love you!
