baby gagging/coughing and vomiting with anything lumpy

He didn't like broccoli! He ate a bit - did gag but managed to swallow it ok with some water. I've read loads of posts of a similar nature re babies gagging and vomiting etc...but when I've asked all the people I know with babies they have had no issues

They sometimes take up to 16 attempts to truly decide if they like something or not. My eldest child refused carrots for ages then suddenly accepted them as her taste buds just had to get used to the flavour and texture.

One thing I remember reading is not to let them drink whilst they eat as it can be a choking hazard. I'm guessing they gulp food that's too big down with their drink.

Keep at it...sounds like he could just need to practice :)

It's not a case of him not liking something - that would be that head shaking screwed up face thing! He coughs and gags and vomits on lumps or foods which normally would be chewed or just coughed up and dealt with. Thank you for your reply though - actually you probably mean the broccoli - yes I'll keep preserving with that :-)

Sounds like he is just not ready for it at 8 months. He is very young, many can't handle chunks past a year. My son did not want anything before that. He gagged badly a few times. He got better past 12 months and by 16 months he had all his teeth and could eat anything :D

Yeah sorry I meant the broccoli flavour :)

If you Google 'gag reflex babies' or similar you'll see what I mean about it being far forward to protect them. I'm no expert but I'd suggest it's why he's having problems. The reflex does move back as he gets older...there is hope!!

My daughter had an awful oversenstive gag reflex and this sounds very similar. We were on 7 month old+ puree when she was 15 months old - the stuff for 10 month olds would make her gag and sick even by then. She was sick on everything and we didn't stand a chance with BLW, despite our efforts. We just had to wait it out. She still takes really small mouthfuls and takes foreveeeeer to finish a meal at age 3.
Weaning DD was such a nightmare and I still dread mealtimes with her. Feeding DS (who eats EVERYTHING we have given him without issue) has been such a different enjoyable experience, and has only shown me just how bad DDs gag reflux was.
Stick with it hun, and if you need to stick to smooth foods so-be-it. I felt such pressure surrounded by all my friends who had these awesome BLW munching babies but I wish I hadn't let myself get so wound up by it, and just carried on with smooth purees and soups xxx

Thanks icklemonster, is your daughter ok with her speech? Ie no issues with anything involving her tongue?! I have my appointment with the feeding therapist Thursday so will keep you posted but he's also poorly at the moment so very hard work bless him

DD's speech seems fine, if anything, she has always seemed advanced for her age. I hope the feeding therapist appt goes well today x

He's fine! 😂 just a sensitive gag reflex and so I need to take weening slowly and like the old fashioned way by building up. Thanks for all your replies ladies

Good news! I hoped it would be something small. :D Such a relief to hear they're all ok isn't it! Hopefully he'll get over it soon with practice. :)

DD was like this at his age and now at 16 months we have no issues with any textures xx

My little guy was exactly the same. He's almost four now and we are in speech therapy for low muscle tone We continue to have feeding issues. Anyhting sharp, like chips, or crunchy pizza crust he will choke on. Best to get early intervention then figure it's normal and be behind the ball
