I feel like such an idiot posting this

What should i use for washing the babies clothes in? I was going to use our normal Ariel gel and Lenore softner however my friend who's just had a baby has said i need to use a non bio! So i have bought a non bio (Fairy Gel) and now MIL is saying i have to use a fabric softner as well yet a different friend said i shouldn't use a softner as they are heavily scented and can cause breathing difficulties!! im getting a bit confused!

please help!!

It is recommended that you use non-bio powder and no fabric softener for babies because they have delicate skin.

I find it strange that your MW said you have to use fabric softener! All the other info recommends no fabric softener because of the added perfume. If you just wash the clothes and finish them off drying in the tumble dryer then they will be lovely & soft. Most people use non-bio & most people also think you have to. You can actually use normal detergent & plenty of people use the normal detergent on all th e family & have no problem. In fact a few years ago I accidentally bought non-bio & it gave me a rash! Couldn't believe it. Anyway, personally I use persil non-bio powder (£11 for 75 washes in Asda) & comfort pure fabric conditioner (on offer at the mo for £5 for 85 washes at Asda) I use fabric.softener because it smells nice & family used it for their babies & was fine. Got it for baby's clothes but I use it for all the laundry.

You're not an idiot! I had to ask the same thing a few months ago. Ideally yes, use non bio to save any irritation on the baby's sensitive skin. I use fairy non bio with a very small amount of comfort pure, although the fairy non bio is soft and nicely scented enough for you not to need softener. I also add napisan as it disinfects all the poo stained clothes when my little one's nappy overflows!!
My sister just used the same washing powder she's always used for her 3 kids.
I haven't heard that fabric softener would cause breathing issues, although I could understand concern with some of the heavily scented ones.

In uk your bounty pack endorses comfort sensitive fabric conditioner and persil small and mighty non bio...they are really good and my skin is super sensitive and I can use them so im hoping baba will b ok with them but with my h/o eczema I will just have to keep an eye on her skin zzzz

Softener and dyer sheets can sometimes irritate a newborn's skin and also can reduce the fire-resistance of the baby clothes. When LO was first born I used special detergent though that only lasted for a few weeks. For this one the baby clothes are getting washed with the family laundry from the start lol.

If you use the child or allergy function on your washing machine if it has one it washes the clothes in more water & adds an extra rinse at the end so to get all of the detergent out of the fibres too.

I use fairy non bio washing powder/gel and fairy fabric softners i did the same with ds one i have to use fabric softners makes them all soft and ds.never had a problem

I use non bio powder and comfort pure or fairy non bio softener, both are safe for babies, never had a problem using them with my son when he was newborn x

I use a baby specific laundry detergent and hypoallergenic softener for baby's clothes.

After much research I am using Surcare

https://www.surcare.co.uk/

I use an all natural cleaner. My Dh and I carry the red head gene and thus gives our kids sensative skin, so no chemicals can be in our laundry detergent.

Thank you for your replies
i get the general gist of it now i will also bare in mind what Natural Momma has said as my hubby was a red head. I'll try the Fairy for the moment and see how it goes

Sorry for the confusion it wasnt MW's advice it was Mother In Law's

thanks again :hugs:
