Baby wipes.....safe to suck ???

My cousin did this constantly! she ended up having an allergic reaction to it about a year after doing it though whith her whole mouth swelling up so just be aware of that :) xx

My LO started trying to suck on them too, every time I tried to use them to clean her hands but thankfully seemed to understand when we told her not to. I can't imagine they taste nice at all but she seems to like them. Anyway now her give her a sponge to suck on and rub all over her face, whilst I clean her hands, just to be on the safe side

I was quite surprised to read the side of the Huggies wipes and discover they contain parabens. I'm always careful to make sure any moisturiser etc that i buy is free from them and parfum so not going to use them on LO any more. He's not tried to suck them yet but I don't think I'd let him.

I read an article last week about 10 items you shouldn't give a baby to play with. Things like mobile phones & TV remotes were on there but so were baby wipes. I can't find it now but it said it was to do with the chemicals in the wipes and the baby ingesting them.

I always take the wipes off LO so he has never managed to try sucking one (as far as I know anyway), but the other day MIL was looking after him and when I came to pick him up she was changing him using the Milton sterilising wipes out of the changing bag.....he had the cleanest bum ever !!

Most wipes contain:

"Chemicals used specifically in baby wipes include:

Fragrance – can be made up of 1000’s of different chemicals many which are toxic when inhaled or absorbed through skin.

Pthalates – used to make fragrance last longer – considered to be a reproductive toxin.

Propylene Glycol & Butylene Glycol – Also found in windshield wiper fluid!* The EPA considers them so toxic they say that skin contact or inhalation can cause brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate & Sodium Laureth Sulfate – SLS is linked to skin irritation, eye irritation, rashes and hair loss. Animal studies show eye damage (especially to young), immune system damage and death. It can create nitrosamines which are carcinogenic.* Once absorbed into the skin, it can be detected in your organs for a lifetime.

DMDM & Urea – is a preservative that releases formaldehyde which causes allergies, chest pain, fatigue, ear infections, immune dysfunction, asthma, heart palpitations, cancer and more.

Polyethylene Glycol – (PEG) –Petroleum ingredient that is carcinogenic and dehydrates your skin.

Parabens –They are strong hormone disruptors and have been directly linked to breast cancer and heart problems. Often listed as Methylparaben, Probylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben & Benezylparaben."

I don't think I'd let my baby put that in my mouth. Hell, I wouldn't even use it near their face.

Me neither. I think some brands stink of chemicals

My LO has been sucking on them ever since he figured out how to pull them out of the pack and suck them, haha. They've never given him an upset tummy or anything, so I'd say they are perfectly fine. My LO literally sucks them dry, lol

Just because he hasn't had an upset tummy doesn't mean they are ok :dohh:

To be honest I don't understand how anyone could let their child put them in their mouth knowing how toxic they are? I mean.. If they were sucking on a bottle of detergent you'd take it off them, right? :nope:

I use Pampers sensitive wipes, and they dont contain any of these ingredients, all though they do contain dipropylene glycol (DMP), but this isnt considered a hazardous chemical, and the amount in a wipe would be very slight. I dont let my daughter chew on her wipes, but i dont freak out or worry if she does, she puts anything and everything in her mouth, and to be honest id be more worried about the unsterilized items going into her mouth, rather than wipes i use on her skin. Though i wouldnt let her use them as a chew rag.. Id rather her use a wet wash cloth. :flower:

Thomas has shoved them in his mouth too but I substitute it with the nearest toy/his dummy etc.

I put one in my mouth, tasted awful. I like the wet flannel idea, I think T would love it!

Just brain, liver and kidney abnormalities....

There is an ingredient list here if anyone is curious

The studies that show its causes these problems are in 100% concerntration, there is absolutly NO evidence to suggest its dangerous (as with all these 'chemicials') in the small quantities present in these products.

he following is the abstract from a study done by the following doctors: O. H. ROBERTSON, CLAYTON G. LOOSLI, THEODORE T. PUCK, HENRY WISE, HENRY M. LEMON and WILLIAM LESTER, JR. It is entitled: TESTS FOR THE CHRONIC TOXICITY OF PROPYLEXE GLYCOL AND TRIETHYLENE GLYCOL ON MONKEYS AND RATS BY VAPOR INHALATION AND ORAL ADMINISTRATION.

"With a view to determining the safety of employing the vapors of propylene glycol and triethylene glycol in atmospheres inhabited by human beings, monkeys and rats were exposed continuously to high concentrations of these vapors for periods of 12 to 18 months. Equal numbers of control animals were maintained under physically similar conditions. Long term tests of the effects on ingesting triethylene glycol were also carried out. The doses administered represented 50 to 700 times the amount of glycol the animal could absorb by breathing air saturated with the glycol.

Comparative observations on the growth rates, blood counts, urine examinations, kidney function tests, fertility and general condition of the test and control groups, exhibited no essential differences between them with the exception that the rats in the glycol atmospheres exhibited consistently higher weight gains. Some drying of the skin of the monkeys' faces occurred after several months continuous exposure to a heavy fog of triethylene glycol. However, when the vapor concentration was maintained just below saturation by means of the glycostat this effect did not occur.

Examination at autopsy likewise failed to reveal any differences between the animals kept in glycolized air and those living in the ordinary room atmosphere. Extensive histological study of the lungs was made to ascertain whether the glycol had produced any generalized or local irritation. None was found. The kidneys, liver, spleen and bone marrow also were normal.

The results of these experiments in conjunction with the absence of any observed ill effects in patients exposed to both triethylene glycol and propylene glycol vapors for months at a time, provide assurance that air containing these vapors in amounts up to the saturation point is completely harmless.

Also the WHO awknowlodges that ist safe... I"t is on the US Food and Drug Administration's list of ingredients which are Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) and is recognized by the World Health Organization as safe for use" It seems that many people follow the WHO guidelines, so....

Forgive me, I simply don't see how you can consider cleaning chemicals in any concentration fit to be consumed by a baby! A lot of things also were once considered safe and are only not now as the long term effects have been studied over a long period of time.

It amazes me that people on bnb debate whether formula should be given to babies, but yet baby wipes are fine to suck on? :dohh:

Salt and water are deadly in high quantities, these are frequently found in foods, drinks etc. Where do you draw the line?

Oh and I edit to say I am not saying it should be encouraged, heck there are better things to suck on, but its not going to harm them if they are in their mouths once in a while. I would be more worried about them choking on them to be fair...

We use reusables so don't have this problem :p I don't think it'd be a grand idea... we switched to reusables because the chemicals in wipes burnt my babies arse.

Each to their own I guess. Not something I'd ever encourage or allow.

My LO does this too. Helps keep her occupied while I change her though!
