Baby's father giving me permission to act as though I have sole PR

I've just spoken to my sons father (he is on the birth certificate) and he has agreed to write me a letter (and have it witnessed) saying that he gives me permission to act as though I have sole Parental Responsibility. He is no longer in my sons life and even admitted to me that he is taking a lot of drugs and he's just got out of hospital for something he didn't want to talk about. He even it would be better for my son if he wasn't around.

My question is, does this allow me to change my sons surname by Deed Poll (he has his dads last name)?

I know the letter will allow me to go out of the country when I want (as I was told by Coram Children's Legal Centre) but I don't really know what else it will allow me to do as it isn't exactly a legal document.. I'm not really sure what it is.

Does anyone have any experience with this kinda thing?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I couldn't seem to find a more suitable place for it.

It probably won't allow you to do much if it's just a letter by him. If he wants to give up his rights he has to do it in court before a judge. With a letter anyone can write and sign and say it's from him!

You don't need a letter to go on holiday, I've been many many times with no problems. I have legal document for my eldest daughter which allow me to move areas, pick the schools of my choice and most of the decisions until she is 18 but you have to go to court for them.

I changed my sons surname without the fathers permission. Through deed poll and explained I had no idea where father is or his contact details which is still true. And they changed it no questions asked. Xx

If his name is on the birth cert, you will have to go through legal procedures to get his name removed. A letter will not be enough to prevent him from changing his mind in the future. It can help, but it's not really legal enough.

Hello... I want to change my daughters name, she's not seen or heard anything from her dad for over 2 years and his family 3 years... Did you do it all online or was it a written letter and posted that you did through deed poll?

If he is willing to sign over his rights I'm sure he'll be willing to agree to a name change via deed poll? X
