I seen my diabetes Dr this morning, she was undecided what to do as my numbers are so irratic, they spike then come down then they spike again, but then when I showed her my growth scan reports she said straight away to go on insulin, she said the growth was too much lol......I am only on once a day dose at the mo, which is good.....Then I gotta go back next week to see her again plus my consultant, but I have no idea what to expect from that appoinment.......

im sorry you need insulin hun, hopefully it wont be for long.

With all due respect, it annoys me when I hear things like that.

I'm a type1 diabetic, and whilst it can be a bit of a pain, the mis-information about diabetes is huge.

If your put on insulin, (as most GD is temporary) you'll be put on a single does 1 or 2 a day.

When injecting the needles are THIN and coated and you do not feel any pain when self injecting, needle is also only about 8mm.

You inject into Fat, so arms, tummy, bum, thighs

IF you GD turns positive you can get a Needlefree injection device, kinda like the thing the use in Star Trek.

If your really phobic you can also get a needlefree kit.

Eating, is basic, eat what you want within reason , its not what you eat but how you eat,

yes you still can eat choclate and not that diabetic muck

Test 3 or 4 times a day, again a little pricker device which is painless.

All meds are free prescription as well.

Doesnt effect your insurance , thugh you have to notify the DVLA, so they ut you on a 3 year drivers liccnce which you re-new.

Diabetes... piece of cake (excuse the pun)

just making small changes to your lifestyle

you manage it, it doesnt manage you

good luck and holla any qeustions, online or by PM

im sorry were you ranting at me for saying im sorry you need it.

it might not hurt too much and everything but im still worry that she has to do it like im sorry i have to jab my fingers.

i take tablets at the moment but im terrified of needing insulin. it is fear of the unknown. its great that you have made peace with that but others havent had the chance yet.

HI jennie, apologese, I wasn't having a rant at you

:flower::flower:

I used to and still get comments from all quarters, "ahh your diabetic, I'm so sorry for you", as If ive got cancer or something.

So its more of a knee jerk reaction.

Diabetes of course is classed as a chronic illness but as long as your sensible, its very mangeable. my own blood sugar is all over the place recently.
and I've tracked it down to the increase in my thyroid meds, so also I get the same "hormones" attaks that you girls get.

I'm a VERY bad needle phobic, and I was mortifed to find out I was diabetic, and the hardest thing I've ever done in my life was to self-inject the first time. Also I HATE the regular blood screenings

BUT the injections dont hurt at all, its more of a mind over matter tjhing in putting a needle into you thats the killer, but you get used to it.

There are now NEEDLEFREE kits you can get which dont have needles at all.
even self blood testing is painfree.

A lot of Diabetic companies/support and careers are aware of this. ITS not normal to inject something or have something injected into your body.

So really its not an issue at all.

PERHAPS I should have worded a bit more carefully, but fast typing, dodgy blood sugars, irritable moods and typeing from work all add up.

ok hun, pls accept my apologese

im sorry were you ranting at me for saying im sorry you need it.

it might not hurt too much and everything but im still worry that she has to do it like im sorry i have to jab my fingers.

Sorry to hear this Shady_R

I've just found out today that I've got to go on Metformin once a day, to help control the sugars too. I was like you, before meals my bloods are perfect, but just the past few days, after meals i've had a few high 7's and an odd 8.

I think i'm being putting on it because baby is so big. Already estimated at 9lb 10ozs. What is your baby at?

Also did they mention induction to you? I though I was having a sweep today and getting my inducing date, but they have pushed me out a week, which scares me some what as she is getting soooooo big.

jaye its fine. i think we all get grumpy about things like that. my son has a feeding tube and people say things like im sorry when to us its part of life so i should have understood that but i seem to have turned into a crabarse this last month. oh the joys.

they have just upped my metformin to three times a day. at 21 one weeks the diabetic nurse did gently say i may need insulin further on. i will cross that bridge i supose. 6 weeks ago i couldnt prick my own fingers so im sure it is mind over matter that is the key.

who ever said this pregnancy lark was easy.

Thank you for the kind words. I have found its loads easier to inject than it is to do the finger prick test, that is so weird too lol. I got my insulin upped from 4 units to 6, but i dont need anymore than once a day still at the mo. I have to check my levels before dinner now too and have a snack at about 10.30 to 11 just to make sure my levels dont drop under 4. I was actually quite shocked at what i can and cant eat when i saw the dietician, especially that i could still have chocolate, although i try not to eat it as i worry that i wont be able to stop eating it lol. But i look at it that i am doing my best to keep my baby healthy. I have been told that they are letting me go to term and induce me around my due date if she isnt here, not too sure on size though, they havent given me and estimated weight, i think she will be around the 9lb mark though. Hope your all feeling ok. Thankfully i am at the moment controlling it.

I have to agree to a point with JASMAK here...it is a lot different when you are pregnant. I am type 1 as well and due to hormones ...my levels were all over the place..I had to adjust my insulin every 1-2 days..you can't eat what you want within reason..a VERY strict diet needs to be followed..eating that little piece of chocolate may make the difference of you feeling good or like crap for the rest of the day. The 8mm pen needles..which is what I assume you are talking about are VIRTUALLY pain free...they do hurt sometimes...or you bleed out a bit and then bruise. You need to test before and after every meal..or at least you should. These "small changes" you are refering to are huge ..especially if you were use to doing whatever you want. You need to make sure you count your carbs, exercise, lots of testing and consult with your doc regularly....It is scary..I was diagnosed at 6 months pregnant and you are worried if your baby is ok, am I going to have a giant baby, will this continue after I have the baby. It is a big life change. I agree it is manageable..but it takes a lot of discipline. I'm no expert but I was able to maintain my diabetes very well through my pregnancy and after my baby..so if you have any questions please feel free to pm me.

np,

you'll be fine.

I dont know the full score for GD, you may or may not need insulin.
either way GD is different from standard MD, becuase, you have it or it will develope for life, generally GD doesnt.

Once your preg. is over then you sugars will get back to normal,
usually.

pregnancy and diabetes (in a mood sense is exactly the same) as OH is just begining to realise

yep,

as I said the needle is very fine its also has a special surface and its ultra sharp. so it pentrates easier.

remember, only single use (though I used to use mine twice) and rotate your sigghts, dialy.

a hypo is considered 3.7, your meter will have a tolerance of + or - 1
I try keeping my levels to between 4-7, up to 10 after a meal is fine.

depends on your insulin, your probably on humulin I

congratulations on discovering the truth, you can eat what you want.

IT NOT WHAT YOU EAT but how you eat, good girl, enjoy your choclate,
its good for you and makes you feel good.

MARS and rubbish like that not too good, try PROPER choclate with a high coca figure, less sugar and fat, try geeen and blacks 70%

make your own desserts,

I regulary make Strawberry Ice cream, Tiramisu & Cheesecake.

remember, FATS wil reduce the sugar spike so say, a cake is better for you that say a syrpy drink.

Again the key is EAT a good diet, glad you found the truth babe,

but as always, knowledge is the key, do the research and ask plenty of question good luck

Actually no, I'm not misinformed.

One of the things I'm a great beliver is in finding out and doing the research himself. IfI can hold my own with a Diabetic consultant at one of the foremost diebtic centes, I can hold my own on an internet forum.

One of the things you are taught is knowledge is power and theres a LOT of misinformation about DM, see some of the above replies to the poster who said she was surprised she can eat choclate!

I can gtee you CAN eat what you want with in certain guidlines. The problem is when the person you get advice from isnt that great which some DSN and MD's are not.

If you bothered to read my second reply to the poster I did apologise for the way I wrote my reply.

and no I wasn't belittling anyones post, just as you "ladies" have moods, us guys get them to... so take a chill pill please

DM can be a hugh life changed but it needed be its ALL in the managment of it. I had a great teacher. I have 3 squares a day, I eat sweet treets, I dance and do Tae Kwon Do, DM's has not changed my life. you mangae the DM it doesnt manage you.

Luckily I'm not on 4 shots a day, but I test as often as I need to. I suspect after a while thing may change. The point is for men/women with DM, you have it for life NOT for just 9 months as in GD.

I would need to do more research into GM for foetus, but my SIL had it and no one ever said there was any major issues for the baby only for the mother.

Insulin is a naturally occuring hormone and has no side effects.

hope your feeling better, this is always the best place to get it off your chest

:happydance:

Actually, it sounds like either you are misinformed, or your doctor's requirements are different. I am NOT allowed chocolate, or to eat anything I want. I required FOUR shots a day with my last baby. It was a HUGE difference in my life...perhaps you are just used to it. I have to test SEVEN times a day. Great, you have type I...good for you? You don't have to come in here all high and mightly, belittling someone else's post, just because you think you know everything. GD is treated (usually) much more strictly than regualr diabetes, because there is a FETUS that can be affected. Get off your high horse already! Rant over.

For me...GD is a big deal. For me...I have to test 7X a day. For me, I am not allowed sugar. I have to eat at certain times of the day, and eat in 15 minutes or take that extra time, divide by two, and add an hour. For me, my diet is strict. Like right now, I am only allowed 60 carbs for my lunch. This means, that I have to look at packages, and see how many carbs per serving and subtract the fibre...but, also make sure that I get the one cup of milk (15 carbs), 1 serving of fruit (15 carbs), my protein choices, and then my starch makes up the rest of those carbs. I am just weary and frustrated with people who come in and give their advice, when clearly we are all told things differently. It is probably best to give support (emotional) and we all just listen to our medical providers...medical advice can come back and haunt you if you are not careful. Something I learned long ago in my last profession. Not only that, but we are not just talking about eating for ourselves and cheating with a wee bit of chocolate, we are cheating our babies too. They get that sugar. I am not messing around. I take diabetes very seriously....GD or not. My Nana died from Type I and I worked with someone who didn't take his diet seriously, and lost a leg from it. I guess, at the end of the day, it is your choice on how to take care of yourself, but I do not think it is right for other's to say "go ahead, eat chocolate, it's not a big deal"...when, for me anyways, it is. That is why I posted the way I did. I took the OP as being concerned for herself, and her baby, and I am here to say, yes, I have had this before, it is hard, the diet can be challenging (at least it was for me based on the diet I am given) but, we can do it together...with POSTIVE support...and in the end, it is all worth it.

Hi Dee,

only briefly as I'm out the door,

1> ok, there is probably a differance, but GM is pretty much for 9 months DM is for life

2> No I'm not talking about Pens, I'm talking about a TOTALLY NEEDLE FREE SYSTEM, no pain, no needles no blood (well occasional blood drops)

3> yes fair enough, there are some changes, but bear in fact its a chronic illness, and when compared to other things the changes are not that bad.

4> Newer testers use softer needles and you hardly feel any pain, if any. I would suggest checking with a DSN

5> problem is we all get lazy and did what we wanted to. we over eat and dont exercise, kids dont cycle to school, we drive everywhere. cheap hicarb food is everywhere. Wonder then why in the western world heart deaseas and DM is at epidemic porportions

I suppose adding it to pregnancy doesnt quite help, so sorry if I didnt take that fully into account. but there is way to much mis information and people not relasing what they can and cant do and invariably make changes.

but the changes I'll reiterate are temprary in most cases. I'll will be diabetic for the rest of my life, where a women with GD will be fine and back to normal after a few months.

I've got years if blood testing, having blood tests (and I'm NEEDLEPHOBIC), side effects from tablets, insulin mangament, and a love hate relationship with food, possible problems with blood preassure, cholesterol, thyroid, ED, retinopthy, kdiney/ liver issues, yet I still gotta put the bread on the table.

and bless every day that the Lord puts before me

take care hope you stuff works out well

now I gotta go home

I think that this thread is getting taken totally off track. I have GD as well, prick my finger 5 times a day, shoot my insulin 2-3 times a day. It sucks but its not the end of the world. I will add that my diabetes counselor has told me the same things that jaye is saying, I can eat basically what I want, its just all about moderations. Anything taken to the extreme can be damaging. And I have to agree, if I tell someone I have gestational diabetes then they act like I've got cancer or my child is going to come out looking like an alien because of it, and this is my first baby so things people say can be really uncalled for and unneccessary. However, BnB is a place for us expectant mommies, and mommies and want to be mommies, to come to and express how we feel and to get support. I'm sure the OP did not intend to offend jaye as I'm sure jaye did not intend to offend the OP. The insulting back and forth is a lil childish and I think we can all be more mature.

My doc diagnosed me with GD at 6 months preg...however I have what they now call a pre-existing diabtes...it was there..I would have it eventually...my hormones in pregnancy brought it out..if you will. I didn't have GD..I have Type1. It is totally manageable...it sucks to count carbs and test and all the "fun" stuff that comes with diabetes. I am extremely strict with my diet and exercise....I don't want to have any of the other complications that come with diabetes. My Dad is type 1 as well and he now has high blood pressure, high cholesterol. glaucoma and poor kidney function. I don't want this to happen so I am a bit anal with my diabetes.lol. Like mentioned, education and support are key. I so need to look into the needle free insulin. Jaye...do you have a link with some info?? I looked into the pump and my doc says I am a perfect candidate..I count carbs and have controlled diabetes..but I'm a little leary!! I guess I'm just old school!!! Diabetes sucks when you are pregnant...always adjusting insulin, sticking to a diet when all you want to eat is Cinnabon mmmm, worry about complications or size of your baby, sooo many more appointmentsexercise being preggo...need I say more..lol. It is quite different. Just out of curiousity Jaye...where are you in Canada...I'm in NS. Hope all is well and you are all able to manage your diabetes..pm if you need to.

I must have a lesser form of the gd, as I have just been told to cut down on portions of certain things and other things are a no no, the first week of the no sugar was hell for me, but after I got over the 1st week it was ok, now I can walk past cakes and chocolate and coke and not even be thinking about, my diet has been healthier than ever too, had to put my insulin up again this morning, but have only put it up to 7, but it done the job, so Im happy about that......Yes I am worried about the impact on me and the baby, more so at the mo, Im worried about the impact on the baby, I know her growth has been 2 to 3 weeks ahead it has however slowed down, quite a bit too, so hopefully thats a good thing, when I seen my midwife last week, she said I am doing a great job, as I have changed things and done a fair bit of sacrificing too, but as I said, its a small sacrifice to make sure bubs is ok and me too......The dietician has been fab and is always a phone call away if I need her, but thankfully I havent had to call her for anything....I have now been given some lucozade tablets, have also been told if I go under 4 at all I have to have 3 of these tablets, then have something like a sandwhich or toast to eat as soon as possible afterwards, so far have had to do that 3 times, but thats my fault for not stopping for a snack....I also had to set my machine up myself, as my gd nurse is so crap, she even told me that it was too compicated to change the time and date on it, when I got it home I had changed the time and date in less than 5 mins and I set up the hypo and hyper bits too.....The injecting is going well too, yes I have bruised but not that badly and I have bled a tiny bit a few times, but all in all, I am pleased with how well I am getting on with it in all honesty.....I have another appointment on Tuesday to see my consultant and the diabetes dr together I think, hopefully Ill have my induction date too, but Im hoping that I wont need to be induced and she will make an entrance on her own.......I would like to ask though, any of you eat yoghurt and which yoghurt do you eat, I cant find any that I can eat at the mo......

I didnt think about the green and blacks chocolate, my dietician said just a small amount, something like a 2 finger kit kat, but I agree that the mars and things like that are totally out the window........

Oh yeah just to add lol, Im on novo rapid insulin with the 8mm needles.....This one starts working within 10 mins and lasts for 3 to 5 hours......
