When Louie was born he was coming out in his sac. It was only when he had crowned that the midwife decided to break them with her massive knitting needle

Is that normal for hospitals? I was just a little shocked that she decided to do it so late on and how that would have made things more easy?

I thought he was going to be one of those lucky babies that were born in their waters :haha:

I know I've had several puppies born in the sac and they have never had a problem, so I don't know why she would break it. After the baby was born, she could have removed it then. Did the baby still have pieces of the sac on him?

Most people I've talked to have had their waters broken earlier (6-8cm) at hospital. However I had a similar situation to you.

My daughter's waters didn't break until after pushing for an hour and a half and I thought afterwards that it would've been easier without trying to push the bag too. For a moment when they broke, I thought she had been born as I felt this immense release of pressure/pain, only to be told, "oh good, there go the waters--should be much faster now"

I'd imagine you could ask for them to be broken earlier during active labour, but if you're like me, I didn't even think about it until after the fact.

With my first, my waters broke as I was being admitted to the hospital, and I started feeling the need to push almost instantly (I got there a bit late - was already at 8cm and got to 10 in the 10 minutes I was there).

But my second was more stubborn - my OB knew I was full term (it was my due date), and that I was in active labor but it wasn't going particularly fast, and he also knew if he sent me home I would be in danger of not making it back in time with how quickly my first was born, so he offered to break the bag at 4cm. Which did the trick - baby born less than 6 hours later (I lost track of time that night). But now I'm wondering - would it have been better to have her born in her sac?

I don't know if it is more a hospital thing or an individual OB/MW thing. I'd think they would have asked you earlier though, especially if you were having difficulties pushing, as relieving some of that pressure seems to help.

The thing was with Louie, he was coming out fast anyway. My stage two was timed at 4 minutes. I felt like she just burst them for something to do :haha:

When baby is coming out sometimes the membranes bulge. The midwife may have broke the bag to minimise the shower she may receive if she let thems burst naturally hehehehe. :)

With my first 2 my waters were broke quite early on, however with my third the midwife said that there was no reason to break them unless the labour went on particulary long (my 2 were both under 4 hours). I had a water birth and DD3 was born in her sac which broke once in the water. Im not sure why she would have broke them when it wasnt preventing you from progressing

:flower:

Harvey was born in his sac. I don't remember too much but oh says the midwife pinched the sac to burst it just after he came out. I had laboured in the pool so they weren't sure whether or not my waters had broke already which might be why they didn't break them sooner

My little girl was born in the sac, as I was pushing and she was emerging my midwife told me that she is going to be born in the amniotic sac are you ok with that, I said if its safe for her then yes. My midwife was very excited by it, she has been practicing for 19 years and has only delivered a few babies in the sac. Once she was out she was on the bed on a pad, the midwife cut the sac and pulled it over her head.

I had no idea that this was even possible. It was pretty cool, Hubby said she slid out with her arm over head and he saw this little face jammed up looking out through it.

my waters dont go till im in transision ready to push lol so not had the chance to have one nearly arrive in the sac yet lol caus both times they burst in style when i stood up

My lil girl was born in her sac. The midwife said its very lucky an she will never drown??? Nice x
