Well i have always worked and this is how it happened for me.
I had to send my girls birth certificate (long one, they dont accept short) to Child Benefit and then had to wait for my certificate to say I am entitled to it and then I appled for Working tax and child tax credits! I also get childcare element cos my girls go to a registered nursery!
I am not too sure about the job centre bit though! x

Same, sent off her birth certificate to apply for child benefit, although they accepted the short version when i did it.. also ask tax credits for claim pack and send completed form back...
as for job centre.. just pop in and ask if you can speak to someone for advice on anything else.
