Best formula for baby that may have allergies ?

Hi

My little girl had a cows milk protein allergy and reflux when she was a baby and she eventually was prescribed special milk and gaviscon after weeks of me arguining with my doctors and my health visitor back then (almost 6 years ago) said if we were to have another baby there is a high risk they would have the same allergy so would need to go on the special milk straight away. This kind of allergy runs in my family

I've mentioned this to my midwife and she has said obviously I can't get the milk prescribed before the baby is born as we can't guarantee it will have the milk allergy which I do agree with so I just wanted to know which milk is the best brand to get that is least likely to cause wind, colic, belly ache allergies etc ?

At least then if I go with that milk and this baby starts showing signs of the allergy I can go to my doctor straight away and I've already tried all the suggestions they will definitely tell me to try first. I don't want this baby to have to suffer for so long like my little girl did it was heartbreaking seeing her like she was

I was looking on boots and they do a comfort milk from cow and gate which is apparently really good, also a couple of varieties of 'pro' mills which I've read are supposed to do good things for minimising colic. I also found some milk that was goat based instead of cow based

The only problem is that it's quite expensive at nearly £20, but I'm not sure what you'd pay for prescription milk so I wanted to add it in there for you as an option

This is an honest question, not meant to be a dig at all, but do you have a reason not to consider BFing? My 2 were both CMI so I sympathise. I did BF and had to change my own diet but was really glad that we were not having to deal with formula.

I am wanting to try and breastfeed and will try again when she's first born but I also don't feel confident enough to breastfeed in public so would be combination feeding either with formula or my own expressed milk. I'm just trying to weigh up all my options and look into the right milk to try just in case.

I love the idea of breastfeeding specially at night times to make it easier but I have a few issues and concerns which I suppose will only be resolved once this baby is here xx

That makes sense. I hope this one ends up not having the same issues anyway. After having two with CMPI I admit I am expecting #3 to be the same. It was way easier to deal with second time around though.

I hope so to as we went through hell for the first 6-8 weeks until they referred us and gave us the prescription milk.
I've been looking into the SMA Comfort milk it seems to have good reviews and we've also bought Dr Brows Options bottles so I'm keeping everything crossed this baby will be ok

As your first baby had the allergy we're the doctors quicker to help you with your second ? I'm dreading having to go through it again and trying to prove there is more to it than reflux or colic ... mummies know best but they make you feel stupid !!

First time around it took us ages to work out what was wrong. We kind of worked out on our oen that it could be CMPI then we found an pediatrician who specialised in allergies and payed for a private appointment. She confirmed what we already suspected ourselves. Because I was BFing the reaction was through what I ate. Once I cut out dairy things improved greatly. The second time around we didn't really bother with doctors to be honest. As I was BFing we didnt need prescription formula. So when DSs symptoms were going the same way at about a week old I cut out dairy again.

Tbh I would just use normal formula.

Comfort formula is thicker but still contains CMP. It is to deal with reflux, completely different from CMPA. I was specifically told by the dietician not to use comfort milk, just to use our normal formula (cow and gate)

Infant formula is so closely regulated the ingredients are identical in all brands. Aptamil and cow and gate are made by the same company. I asked Gracies dietician about it and they told me to pick whichever box I liked the look of or price of. For that reason we picked cow and gate.
