I'm confused about using an opk. I am temping and watching my cervical fluid but I wanted to try some opk's this month. But what's a good time to take it? FMU, mid-afternoon, evening? Should I be using them twice a day? Any advice would be awesome! I'm on CD8 and FF says I usually ovulate on CD12-13.

The one thing I know for sure (even said it on the instructions for my OPKs) do not use fmu. I researched a lot on different websites and based on that I tested in the afternoon (around 1) and only once a day because the OPKs weren't cheap. If you test twice a day I read doing like 10 am and 4 pm, or 12pm and 6pm. The twice a day is in case you have a short surge. I did it once a day and got 4 days of postives so mine wasn't short at all.

Agree with ttc1soon. My instructions said FMU but I later learned that it's better to do it later in the morning. (However I learned this AFTER testing with FMU for a month.) I had 4 days of +OPK so I don't need to test twice a day. but, if you go the entire month without getting a positive, you might start testing every 12 hours instead of every 24. Some people's surge only lasts about 12 hours in their urine. Good luck!

Thank you for the advice!! I will definitely start testing once a day in the afternoons and see what happens.

hi there! I read the best time to test was between 12 and 2. I got my very first positive opk when i tested at 12 in the afternoon so every time from then I've tested at 12. Good luck!

And just FYI...it CAN work with FMU. It did with me. But the reason it's suggested to do it later is that the LH surge *usually* happens early in the morning, and then makes it's way into your urine a bit later in the day. So, if you test with FMU, the LH may not have made it's way into the urine yet even though you DID have a surge. And, if you don't test again until the next morning, you may end up missing the time when the test would have detected it. That's why they suggest later in the day. But, some people's surge is detectable for longer than 24 hours (like myself) so it was fine for me to do it in the morning and once a day. :) Good luck!

Hi!
I usually do mine in the evenings, around 5ish, but that is because i dont want to explain why im taking a cup with me to the bathroom (and taking a longer bathroom break! :haha:)

I know that with FMU i dont think i ever got a positive, because somewhere i read that you metabolize LH during the day, not at night or something along those lines

Good luck and :dust: to everyone!

Question for all you ladies, when you get a + on the OPT does that mean you are ovulating the next day? or that day? or what?
It's my 3rd month ttc and I am going to pick up a OPK tomorrow and it will be CD12 for me, so I will start testing that afternoon. I got a lot of advice from these posts. It will be my first time ever using an OPK, which kinds are the best to get?

P.S. I absoutely love this website. I joined near the beginning of Feb and it's like I have my very own online support system! All kinds of ladies all trying to do the same thing! : )

:dust: To all : ))

I got the answers brand OKPs because it was a 20 pack just to make sure that I know I caught it. If this is not your month I would suggest buying online for the future (thats what I am going to do from now on), you can get a LOT for a quarter of what you might pay in the store. And about when you ovulate after the positive OPK is different for each person but the general range is 12-36 hours I believe. My instructions told me to BD the 3 days after the positive OPK. But also for good measure you should BD every other day if possible because you are fertile the day or two before the postive opk because sperm can live for a while.

I tested at 2pm...

A positive OPK means you will most likely ovulate 12 to 36 hours later. I always made it a rule to BD the day of the positive opk. We actually only bd the day of the positive opk this cycle.

Hi Ashleylu! Well...an ovulation test detects LH in your urine. When your body is prepping to ovulate, a "surge" of the hormone LH is released. This hormone surge is what causes the little egg to burst out! Yay! LOL. So, when the test shows positive, it means your "surge" has been detected and therefore you will probably ovulate sometime in the next 12-36 hours. (So yes, generally when you get the +OPK you will O the next day) Once you see a positive test, you don't need to keep testing, you know your surge has happened. This is also the reason you always go by the FIRST positive test you get. Some people continue to test, just for fun or curiosity or whatever. You might see a positive for a few days. That just means the LH is still is your system enough to trigger a positive test. Some people will only see one positive test. Either way is normal.

*However, just because you have the LH surge and get a positive test, doesn't mean for sure you will ovulate. It just means your body got all geared up for it. I have read that some women will get a +OPK, then days of -OPK, then positive again. I've heard this can mean you didn't ovulate the first time around, and your body quickly geared up again & attempted to O again.

I am charting my temp and though it's a bit confusing yet in the beginning, when I get my +OPK and see my temp spike, it's a great reassurance I have O'ed.

Happy peeing! LOL! :happydance:

I always BD when my CM changed to EW regardless of the opk. In fact we only bd 3 times the cycle we conceived on. first day of EWCM and the day before and day of my positive opk

Good luck ladies! I know OPK's helped me confirm my cycles every time I used them.

P.S. I used Walgreens brand tests. It was $20 for 20 tests. I ended up using 12 of them last month because I started using them soon after AF was done and I continued to test after I saw a +, just out of curiosity. This time I will probably wait until CD10 or so and won't need to use as many. I may look into buying some only if I need more. (Hopefully I won't need more!!)

I got some ovulation tests on Amazon for super cheap; 50 tests for under $14 and I got 20 pregnancy tests as well. I looked at the retail stores and just couldn't imagine paying that much for 7 tests. Dh asked if they really work because they look so flimsy but I figure WTH, I'll just go for it this month and if I get my BFP, it'll be awesome!
