Having been convinced I would go overdue (being a FTM and having had no real signs of impending labour) I went to my 39 week midwife appt. I was 39 weeks exactly and it was 21st August.
The midwife did her usual checks, blood pressure fine, fundal height fine, urine test fine, babies heartbeat was good and strong and babies head was cephalic and approx 1/5th engaged (yeah right!).
That was the third time since 34 weels that I had been told she was head down and by 3 different midwives none the less.
My midwife told me if i wanted to try and get things moving I should get on my yoga ball and just bounce for a few hours each day. My OH thought this was a great idea so when he got home he pulled it out of the cupboard and left me to it while he went off to work. I started bouncing and was on for maybe 10-15 mins when my legs starting hurting. I stood up abd walked over to the window to see what was going on....just when i was walking back to the couch I felt a pretty big gush. At first I thought I had just peed myself or dislodged a big bit of discharge from bouncing (sorry gross!).
the gush didnt stop and I had to run to the bathroom to see what was going on. it was most definitely my waters!!
I called my OH and told him to come on asap. I the called triage and was told to come in for an exam but that i would likely be sent home to wait for contractions to start. My OH arrived home about 45 mins later and we packed everything we needed in the car and set off for the hospital. It was only ten mins away and when i arrived I asked to wait. By this point I had soaked through about 4 maternity pads and two pairs of trousers so i was very reluctant to move about incase another big gush came out while in the waiting room. Not too long after i arrived i was taken to be checked over. The midwife was sure it was my waters but did get a doctor to com and confirm. She told me to head home and wait for contractions to start. If they didnt I was to come back the next day for an induction at 2pm.
I sooo didnt want to be induced so i prayed i went into labour naturally. When we got home, we thought best to have something to eat and perhaps have a rest before going back to hospital. We just threw something in from the freezer and sat down to watch telly. I remember vividly starting to feel very strong tightening during corrie. the contractions came on almost instantly and were already 7 mins apart. After 45 mins i called triage and they said to wait until they were 3-4mins apart. Well that didnt take long and within an hour and a half my contractions were anything between 3 and 5 mins apart. My OH called triage again and told me to come in.
When we got there we were taken to the birthing suite where a very unpleasant midwife swithered as to whether to even examine me! eventually she did and said once again that babiea head was still not fully engaged so she wasnt sure why i was feeling contractions so frequently. It was after 11pm when I could no long handle the pain and asked to be moved to labour and delivery for an epidural. I also wanted to get away from that midwife as she was horrid!
I was transferred up and just after midnight on 22nd Aug i was given my epidural. Staying completely still durig contractions was the hardest thing to do but once it was in....I breathed a sigh of relief. I was just sooo out of it before hand and hadnt been given any pain relief for 5 hours of contractions.
My new midwife said she would examine me at 2am and see where we were at. 2am arrived and the midwife examined me and said was still only 2-3cm and that babies head was still too high and that she wanted a doctors opinion. Cue 5 mins later the doc arrived with a scanned as she wanted to see what was going on. Lo and behold baby was breach and it was her bum they had been feeling for the last 5 weeks!
I instantly started crying saying I need a section!! the midwife and doctor both assured me that it would be fine and that baby was very happy in there so there wasnt a huge rush to get her out. The next few mins were a total blur but i think my oh phoned my mum to tell her as she arrived shortly afterwards to try and calm me down.
It wasnt long before i was whisked into theatre and pumped full of drugs. They put a screen up and started testing how much i could feel. Once i could not feel anything up to my nipple they began the operation. my heartrate was sooo fast at this point i kept setting off the machine!
within mins the surgeon said to my oh 'do you want to see' he nervously said i dunno and then looked anyway. He burst into tears and said thats her bum out!!! she was then swifted taken out of the room to rough her up and do her scores. I couldnt stop crying shouting where is she why isnt she crying. My midwife said shes absolutely fine she is through next door so you cant hear her. In what felt like an eternity they brought her back to me and my oh and he cried looking at her.
She had a full head of dark hair and they explained that she had been breach for a long time so her skull was slightly misshaped but that it would work itself out in a few weeks. I didnt care i was just sooo happy that she was here.
They fixed me up and we were then taken to a recovery room for a while where she was weighed and given to me. She was 7lb 3.5oz and 54cm long although she looked smalled because of her froggy legs! she was (and still is) perfect!
I was then taken to the postnatal wars at around 6am and my oh was told to go home. I didnt sleep at all as all i wanted to do was look at her!
I stayed in until Saturday (having had her on the thursday) and have been home with her for just over two weeks now.
Although it was not the delivery i was expecting i am just soo glad someone noticed she was breach before i had to start pushing!
Sorry my story was soo long!
