Hi ladies! I haven't been active on here for a while but I just wanted to ask a question regarding medications. I had my DD four years ago and wasn't yet diagnosed with any mental illness. I have a boyfriend now who wants to have a baby within the next few years, but I am worried as I take over 5 psych meds. I have bipolar, depression, anxiety and ptsd.Any advice on what to do? I will talk to my psychiatrist when the time gets closer, but I am very scared of the thought of coming off my meds. My severe depression manifested during my last pregnancy. Thank you!

I don't have any experience taking psych meds. But you definitely need to talk to your doctor. It is possible they can switch you to some safer meds for pregnancy. But they may need time to adjust doses and make sure they work.

I agree with Krissie on checking with your doctor first before trying to have another baby.

In the UK, some areas have dedicated doctors or midwives who specialise in ante- and postnatal psychiatry. It may be worth asking your doctor if there is such a specialist in your area and have a chat with them? I'd also mention it to your regular psychiatrist sooner rather than later. That way you can have a long term strategy eg if you need to switch drugs or wean yourself off some. As you'll know, there's always a degree of trial and error with psych drugs so you'll be better off giving yourself lots of time to see what works, if you need to make a change.

Are you in therapy? In many cases, CBT and other therapies can help you reduce the amount of drugs you needs to take or make you not need any at all. It's important to have the drugs as a backup but it may be worth exploring ways you won't need them in the future, for yourself as well as making future pregnancies safer.
