Hi girls. I know some medications are no-nos when you're breastfeeding...

Was just wondering what the verdict was on birth control while you're breastfeeding? Are any types alright?

Most people here use the pill or the needle, so those are the 2 options I'm most interested in hearing about, as those are what I'm most likely going to be looking at after the baby. (Rather than hearing about the implant, etc.)

I'm on Cerazette. It's a mini pill that can be taken while BF. I personally haven't had any side effects yet.

ETA: For most people on this, there is no period either. Alhtough there can be a bit of break through bleeding, it's not the same as having a period once a month.

i've been on the mini pill before. won't be needing to this time though cos dh is having a vascetomy next week :)

You shouldn't have the combined pill when you're breastfeeding, only the mini pill.

Didn't think the injection or combined pill was to be used when breastfeeding. I will be having the merina coil, other methods are condoms (obviously), abstinence:rofl:, progesterone only pill and oops:blush:I was wrong....just looked it up and the depot injection is an option:dohh:

I had the implant before and it seemed like the perfect method for me. A few months own the line however I realised it had made my depression spiral out of control, I also know another person who this happened to and other people on baby forums have also mentioned it. I didn't believe it could have been the cause of my severe depression but once it was removed there was no denying how much better I felt. I'm sure it doesn't have the same effect on everyone but if you have suffered from depression before I think you need to be aware of this possibly very nasty side effect:hugs:

I got the implant, no periods (about a week of light bleeding/ spotting). And it's safe with bfing. I never remember to take pills so this is great for me :)
Love it, and love freaking ppl out when they feel it, lol

I did the mini pill after having Casen but I'm horrible at remembering everyday so things like that just aren't for me. Now I have the mirena IUD and love it, I've had it now over a year.

im on Cerazette too but have had constant spotting, hoping it settles soon doc said it could take three months

HaHa!! I used to have the implant, and i liked creeping people out too. Such fun....

Your doctor will put you on whatever they deem safe for you and the baby. I'm taking a pill - Errin. My doctor said she'll put me back on Ortho whenever I stop breastfeeing.

I am on the mini pill and bfing fine. I was worried about the whole taking it at a set time but I set a daily alarm on my phone to remind me and at a rtime i know we are usually at home u also have a 3 hour window with most mini pills.

I was told by my HV that you dont need to take any birth control whilst breastfeeding (if you are 100% bfeeding) as the feeding works as a contraception but i havent looked into it.
At the moment we are using abstinence  but we are looking into hubby getting a vasectomy.
I wonder if the breastfeeding as birth control is right?!?!?
x

Erm think again:dohh: I was exclusively breastfeeding Toby and got pregnant:blush:

It's only reliable if you are feeding at least every 3 hours including through the night, any longer between feeds and you may ovulate....I wouldn't rely on it if you definitely don't wanna get pregnant:muaha:

Luckily we always wanted 4 kids but boy....this was a bit quicker than I expected:rofl:. I'm due to have the baby in the next week and Toby's only 14months old.

Harry feeds every 2 hours including in the night, apart from if we are out and hes in the pram then he will go 3 hrs but then having said that last night i fed him and put him to bed at 10 like usual and he didnt wake up for a feed until 2am so i better start being careful xx
