Sorry in advance for any typos, I am typing with one hand and holding Ava with the other.
I was due to be induced on the 12th of September but woke up at 1 in the afternoon on the 9th (I like my lie-ins) and noticed the odd pain, but i'd been having pelvic pain so put it down to that. Around 2.30 I started timing the pains. They were every 7 minutes, lasting 30-40 seconds. Headed into hospital at 6.30, though i kept asking my mum whether she was sure I was actually in labour. I was examined at around 7.30 and was told my cervix was still posterior and I was only 2-3 cm. At this point I started to panic, knowing the contractions would get worse was terrifying, it was already unbearable. I was told i'd be examined in 4 hours. (She was born less than four hours later)
I got a shot of pethadine which was amazing. Apparently I was asleep and would pull funny faces during contractions, I was aware of the pain but the pethadine did take the edge off. At around 9 the pethadine had worn off and I was in so much pain that my mum got the midwife to examine me again, I was 6cm.
I walked over to the delivery room, dripping blood all the way. Then I got my epidural- which failed. I could still feel everything. They got the anesthetist back to redo it, and it did numb the contractions. But 10 minutes later baby's heartrate started dropping, she was bradicardic and another 2 midwives, a doctor and two pediatrcians came running in. They decided she had to come out now. The doctor examined me and said I was fullt dilated and the babys head was right down so it was too late for a c section so I would need an assisted delivery. He attempted using ventuose but the cup kept coming off her head, however my [ushing was apparently very effective and I managed to push her far enough down so he could use forceps, despite the fact that my epidural had started working.
Ava Lilith arrived at 23.16 9th September, after just 16 minutes of pushing, weighing 7lb 10. I had a failed epidural, I ripped out my cannula by mistake, Failed ventuose, forceps and episiotomy and stitches. Everything I hadn't wanted. But I wouldn't have changed it. Having the failed epidural meant that when the next one worked as it was literally at the delivery, I didn't feel the ventuose or forceps or episiotomy. Although it doesn't sound like a great labour and delivery, it really was. I was still asking whether they were sure it was labour an hour before I gave birth.
I got an infection so had to stay in hospital for a couple of days but we are both home and happy and healthy. She's such a good baby, she sleeps well and feeds well and is so bright and alert.
She's perfect.
