At 4:50 am on April 4 I woke suddenly as a warm gush of liquid soaked my panties but gratefully not our bed. I did have a towel nearby and that was soaked as well. My first words were to my fiance, sleeping next to me were: "Honey, I think my water broke!" He had barely gotten any sleep as he gets home after 11pm and usually stays up until 2 am or 3 am. I should have told him to get to bed earlier, because I believed that day to be my real EDD after my original EDD of March 28th came and went without a hitch. I did lose a bit of my mucous plug on March 3rd, and for the past few days had been very anxious to have my little girl!
I think I took a shower, got dressed, and cleaned a bit before we left for the hospital around 7 or 8 am. We got checked in the Women's Evaluation Unit. I was only 2.5 or 3 cm dilated. They couldn't tell if my water had broken or not. They said it might have been too small a leak to tell.
I was asked if I wanted to get induced that day, as I was 41 weeks pregnant by their charts. I was hesitant of the induction, but I desperately wanted my little girl and agreed! We moved to the labor ward and I was hooked up to an IV, heart monitors for LO, and given Cytotec at 11:15 am. I had read up on the negatives of this drug, but for the life of me could not remember a thing about it. I did pee shortly after they inserted it; the nurse had forgot to tell me not to walk or pee for a while after it was inserted--oops.
I was allowed a liquid diet which included Popsicle, jello, and juices. The pain was tolerable until 4.5-5 cm and at that time I opted for IV meds which did not lessen the pain; they only made me sluggish and drunken-like and although I wanted to go without the epidural for fear of complications (like paralysis), I did receive it around 5 cm dilation. The process of getting it wasn't much more painful than getting the IV. The catheter was a lot better than what I expected and was painless. I did have feeling in my legs, although unevenly. I was pain-free from then on. They decided to break my water at 7 or 8 cm and meconium was in the water and everything began moving so fast as at least 12 medical staff came to fill the room and they informed me my little girl might have to be rushed to the NICU.
I began pushing around 6:50 pm. Initially the nurses had told me when to push, but then I felt a slight sensation when I had a contraction and lead myself through pushing from there on. Wren Alice was born on April 4, 2013 at 7:22 pm. She was 8 pounds 9 ounces and 21 inches long. I didn't get immediate skin to skin until they checked her out and decided that she was fine and didn't need to be moved to the NICU.
She's very "talkative" and will mimic us if we stick our tongues out! She's held her bottle a few times and I think we have co-slept twice (which was scary, but we were exhausted and I didn't fidget) because she finds her bassinet is not as comfy as my chest is.
