birthday cake help.

my oh wants me to make lo's birthday cake next month. I have a really nice vanilla sponge recipe but it will only make enough do 16 thin slices and i need about 30. Obviously to make double i just double the ingredients but what size cake tin should i use and how long should i cook it for? Would a square cake be easier them a circular one?

what size tin do you normally use for your 16 slice cake mix?

I find round cakes easier to cover
