So I was just wondering if anyone here has been able to birth in a birthing centre with a high bmi??

I know alot of hospitals won't allow you if your bmi is over a certain level but surely if you've had no complications it shouldn't be a factor?

I've got a high bmi but firstly i'm hardly what i'd call huge. Pre pregnancy I was a size 14-16, the uk average! Also the midwife hasn't even mentioned my bmi although we havent yet discussed my birthing options. Im 25+5 now & see her next at 26+6. If my bmi is so bad do you think she'll mention it at my next appt as i'm thinking she's going to want to send me for the GTT??

I so want a birthing centre birth so i'll be gutted if she says i'm too fat

xxx

I'm not going for a GTT. I did that once (non-pregnant) and had a big hypo reaction at 3 hours. I'm not putting me and the baby through that.

My midwife hasn't actually said i'll need one but i'm just assuming that it's something she'll mention at my next appt due to my high bmi. Its something i'm going to research though if she does say I need it xxx

How high is your BMI, if you don't mind me asking?
Mine is 34 and my midwife keeps telling me I would be perfect for a homebirth! I'm a size 18 pre-preg so I imagine I must be bigger than you. I'm not opting for a homebirth this time so will def be in the birthing centre unless any complications arise - I am 16 weeks so there is still time for things to change.

The birth center I plan on going to assigns either 2 or 3 points for being over/ under weight. If you have more than 3, you have to be evaluated by an OB and may have to have a hospital birth. I think it's kind of silly that weight alone would keep someone from a midwife assisted birth.

I do not like BMI, my BMI is high too. Pre preg in the obese category and I am just slightly over what you would call average!! US size 10-12 pre preg!! I am 5'6 and have a lot of muscle (soccer player) In the US the Drs do not use BMI as much as I hear about over there, how do they compensate for having a high BMI if you aren't really that overweight?

guidline bmi for homebirth or birth centre (as my midwife said giving birth in a birth centre is like going to your house or mine haha) is 30. mine is 32.2 and had to see consultant. no probs what so ever so far (touch wood) consultant did say at first appointment its not recommened as first and bmi.

but my midwifes seem ok and last appointment midwife said just get the consultant to sign you over midwife lead care and we will get your home birth sorted. so on wednesday thats what am going to do. i have also only but on weight in uterus area haha. so going to TELL her heehee.

the bmi is just a guidline and and the consultant can only advise if you go to natural birth there are alot alot of woman far more knowledable than me.

but what i would say is reach, know what you want and don't let consultants bully you its YOUR choice. i learnt the long hard way haha. fingers crossed for wednesday good luck.

Sorry if this is a really stupid question - but you do mean pre-pregnancy BMI don't you?

Sorry for the late reply ladies! My bmi was worked out at my booking in appointment and it was 32 then :(

My midwife hasn't mentioned it once to me and has even given me the leaflets for the new birthing unit & the telephone number to book a visit round it. Do you think at my next mw appointment she'll say i'm too big?

It winds me up as I know im not a huge girl at all. I have big boobs and a big bum lool!!

Im not sure what the cut of point for the BMI is but i wasent allowed at my birth center because of my BMI despite no other problems at the time it was discussed.
