While pregnant with our first we took them. I found them helpful in some ways. The biggest is in ours they went through the stages of labor and what to expect, we had a DR fill us in on the different types of birth and what devices they may use to assist. We watched a few videos went over breast feeding. AND much much more including recieving some dvds and magizines. I think the biggest help was being around a room full of woman who were in the same boat as me feeling the same emotions ect. I know it wa helpful for my husband also to be around men that were going through the same thing! ..
I decided not to take any courses myself due to the cost, I figure you're going to (hopefully) be in a place where you can be guided through the labour and the breathing, etc. I've done most of my research on the net and found it to be quite helpful and I don't know if the classes would really be that beneficial.
In case you decide not to go for an actual class like me, I highly recommend watching "Laugh and learn about childbirth". Its an actual birth class that was recorded. The lady who takes the class is funny and informative. I learnt a lot from the program.
My DH and I are taking a class at the hospital about 8 weeks before I'm due. I honestly don't think I'll learn a whole lot from it, but I think DH will benefit from it. He hasn't ever really been around this kind of stuff, so I think it will give him more of an idea of what will go on. Plus, it'll give us both a chance to see our newly-remodeled L&D ward
I'll also be taking a breast-feeding class, by myself. It's only $5, so I figured I may as well!
Well I found out today that there is a one day class available at the hospital I work for and its free since I am an employee. So DH and I are going to go in Jan. Hopefully they will tell him to massage me a lot.
