I was just watching the news and theres loads of stuff about bpa in plastic baby bottles! When the bottles gets heated up (microwave, boiling water etc) the chemical can leak into the liquid and can be harmful!!
Im really worried now:hissy:
Anyone else worry about this?

Yes I worried about it so I made sure I got BPA free bottles. BPA is banned in canada and I can see it happening here one day. However the bottle manuacturers seem to be waking up to this and there are now more and more BpA free bottles coming onto the market all the time. I started off with Born Free bottles, but have now moved on to Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles as they have just bought out BPA free ones in Feb this year. If you're going to get the Tommee Tippee bottles check they are the new BPA free ones though as where I live the only place that stocks them so far is Boots. Tesco, Mothercare etc all still have the old bottles in stock.

Thank you meels-spot, i'm using tommee tippee ctn at the moment but they are the ones containing bpa! I'm sending OH out in a bit to see if he can find bpa free tommee tippee!
If not i'm going to use MAM.
I'm so angry, why isnt this common knowledge? It should be something all mums are told! Grrr!

Not sure if I can post a link to another baby site but this explains it all:

this has been an issue around for a while sweetie, after we'd spend 100's £ on avent when i was pregnant with maddi. i switched to mam's not long after. i do think they're is two sides to the story, as would large companies really do something that would indanger babies and risk multi-million pound law suits, that said, it scared me too x

"try" not to worry to much ladies, as long as ur not putting boiling water straight in bottles (wait for a while) if u already have then just start waiting a while, u can smell wot there talking bout .... also dont used awfully scrached bottles, thsi chemicals in tins and alsorts aswell, try not to worry ladies x

Hi my MIL said something about this to me this morning as she had heard it on the news. We use Avent bottles always have and now im really worried what are the risks? Should I switch bottles? If so what bottles should i get? thanks x

They have all been taken off the shelves in Canada and packaging must say "BPA free"... You have to be careful with toys that are plastic and rubber and soothers etc too.

Avent bottles here are BPA free... I would think they would be the same? Unless you got them a long time ago.

I found the news report on BBC 1 breakfast this morning really confusing. The experts on it couldn't really answer the presenters questiona and it was so vague I don't know what to think! I always use boilded water that has cooled a bit but i was under the impression that it needed to be warm enough to sterilise the powder! Doc on BBC1 said formula powder was a problem too but didn't explain it fully. Yet another thing to worry/feel guilty about!!!!

I am worried now! i have avent bottles but the BPA must be in dummies too? confused what to do :(

BPA is in lots of plastic cups/plates etc. I wouldn't panic too much. I might start making up feeds in glass jug then putting it in the bottle when it's cooled enough for Katie to drink it.

This was huge a while back.. here in the US I heard it was banned back in April of 2008. I keep hearing it's bad, but what it does IDK, does anyone know?!
All I know is that I, my whole family, everyone I know grew up drinking out of bottles with it and I'm fine, whole family is fine, everyone I know is fine.

It can contribute to fertility issues... Adults should not re-use plastic bottles either and if you want a water bottle to re-use, you should buy ones that state bpa free.

This is exactly how I feel about this situation - lately there is so much stuff about what we should and shouldn't be doing, I don't warm bottles in the microwave, which is really the only time it counts. I make all my feeds fresh now, she doesn't have them warm anyway so I don't think its really an issue?? Sometimes I think it is just to get us all in a flap so we start buying the more expensive bottles, or so we swap and they can have ecen more of our money! :hissy:

I don't think you should panic if you've been using non-bpa free bottles as like others have said bottles etc with bpa in have been used for many years. However I think if you now have a choice between the old plastic and bpa-free plastic then it makes sense to buy bpa free.

The ones I know are bpa free are Born Free, Tommee Tippee (since Feb 09) and MAM. I think many of the others are planning to change over this year. As far as I know Avent bottles in the UK are so far NOT bpa free. Hope that helps. Anyway if they are bpa free they will clearly state it on the box. The new Tommee Tippee bpa free bottles have an orange BPA-FREE stamp on all the boxes so if it doesn't have it on there they are the old bottles!

yep ive purposely bought non-BPA bottles, have got 6 mam ones and 2 closer to nature ones, i do have some BPA ones but don't heat them ones up, i use them for if ive expressed and shes having it straight away, all the BPA ones are for the cold milk in the fridge so they can get heated up, i use cold water steriliser aswell cos heard that boiling them or steam / microwave sterilising lets the BPA out

while were on the subject, does anyone know of any BPA free dummies?

x

gonna bin all my avent bottles and by new ones, tommee tipee or mam - does anyone know if either of these brands will fit in my avent steam sterilizer? and yes, BPA free dummies anyone? x

That's why I don't pre make formula. I put 8 oz of room temp water and 4 scoops formula in the bottle and shake, it's good for a few hours and she drinks it long before then anyways. That ways it doesn't get heated up so much. We do sterilize them but that's why we got BPA free bottles.

BPA bottles are not banned here yet from what I understand, but we made the switch a couple weeks after Erica was born. BPA can leak into the formula/bm when heated in the bottle, and has been linked to fertility issues, obesity, and even cancer. All of BornFree products are BPA free, Dr. Brown's makes BPA free, Avent makes BPA free, MAM makes BPA free, And of course any glass bottles are BPA free. The really hard clear plastics are generally the ones that contain BPA, and you can tell by flipping it over and checking the recycle code. BPA containing bottles have a 7 on them.

This link has tons of different bottle and sippy cup brands that are BPA free.
