Hi ladies!
Well this is my birth story, better late than never I suppose but we've only been released from the hospital today! I went into labour at 5am on Friday the 1st June. My contractions were mild, but started out lasting 30 seconds two minutes apart and they never got any closer together, or further apart, just more painful haha. I rang l&d at 6 because they were so close together, she said to wait till the pain was unbearable then call again. She asked about baby's movement and I said I hadn't noticed anything at all. She said to monitor movements between contractions and then call in a few hours if no change.
At 8am I rang l&d again and got the same MW. She told me she thought I was far too early in labour to go to l&d, but to go into the assessment centre because of the movement, so we went in with no bags or anything as we would be coming back home. I'm afraid times after this got a bit fuzzy. Got to the assessment centre, still getting very uncomfortable contractions (not yet painful) and they monitored me for an hour, said movement was fine and I was definitely in labour, but that it could be hours yet and that his head was too high up to sit on the cervix properly, so we got sent for a walk for four hours and then we were to present at l&d as we were now consultant led as we'd had reduced movement a few time.
After this contractions started getting intense pretty fast, we walked around the hospital pond and the cocodomol they gave me did bugger all. After an hour and a half I literally couldn't handle them... besides I was scaring ducks and patients alike. Went in to l&d to be assessed, they found me to be 3cms and because I was obviously in so much pain they decided they would keep me. At this point a friend dropped off our bags and ran away again looking terrified. Was given Pethidine, which I loved, the contractions still hurt but I was under control and could breath through them and doze in the gaps.
It was discovered that baby had moved back to back, which explained a lot of the pain. I was told to keep moving around to try and turn him and get his head down on the cervix. They gave me gas and air, because I'd had an anti sickness injection it didn't make me feel queasy, just really happy! I loved the stuff and talked an awful lot of crap for about five hours which amused mum and hubby no end. Finally got examined... 4cm
so had the epidural I'd been begging for.
After the epidural my temperature started rising and both mine and baby's heart rates were far too high, I found myself shivering and feeling feverish and groggy. I could tell they were becoming more concerned as more and more people kept ending up in my room, watching the monitors and muttering. I kept calm and just tried to maintain a zen outlook, not much choice
. They said they would give me two hours and if I was 10cms then great, if not then they would like to do a section. I agreed immediately as Fin's heart rate was scaring me.
Two hours later I was at 5cms
and it was 11pm. I'd been in labour for 16 hours and was miserable. So a c-section sounded good, at least we'd be done and I was desperate to meet my baby boy. The nicest anaesthetist came and chatted to me and they wheeled me off to surgery, they had time to be calm about it and not panic. I ended up with a spinal and an epidural because the epidural wasn't fully numbing me and I felt it when they put the catheter in.
They started the incision and I was terrified but still trying to keep my cool. Finley was born and they rushed him off to the resuscitation table. He didn't cry and we later found out he'd had the cord wrapped around his neck twice (noway would he ever have been born naturally
) and he had an initial APGAR score of 2. My husband was sent to see and he could see Fin was blue and not breathing, they sent for a crash team but luckily before it arrived he started making little cries and just as they got there he let out a proper cry thank god.
At this point I started feeling like I couldn't breath and started shivering uncontrollably, apparently this was due to the spinal but I panicked and was given oxygen. Not hearing him cry were the scariest moments of my life, writing this makes me very emotional, but at the time I just felt numb and afraid. After five mins his APGAR score was 9 and Chris was finally handed our boy, still a bit blue, but perfect.
Because of the infection in labour we were both kept in for five days and were finally released with a clean bill of health today. He's feeding amazingly well, and unlike birth BF has been no prob at all. He's so beautiful.
Sorry for the length, but I will say that he was worth every second and I'd do it again any day. I already can't imagine our world without him!
