Very random question and I'm wondering whether any of you experienced this as well.
My son is now 8.5 weeks old and was born at home after a 20 min extremely fast labour. I had a massive bloody show and my waters broke after that (they broke in a massive gush) and they were full with bright red blood! Five mins after that my son was born alive and healthy.

But I'm just starting to question and wonder whether that is normal? I never had the blood with my daughter apart from a show. I rang the hospital when it happened and they told me to come in immediately.

I googled it and a few say that it can show that the baby is in distress, but obviously I wouldn't have known that as I had no care during my labour.

So did anyone experience pretty much pure bright red blood in their waters when they broke and was t considered 'normal' or was it a cause for concern? It's just something I've thought about a few times and wondered about. Especially as just before he was born I was panicking so much not knowing whether he was going to be born alive or not!

Yes I did. I was induced, so in hospital the whole time I was in labour. I had gush of blood almost as soon as active labour started. I panicked too and called the midwife, but dismissed it as a bloody show..... I then bled constantly for the next few hours in big gushes every contraction (I KNEW it wasn't 'just' a bloody show!!) and the midwife called the doctor several times because she was concerned but they checked that the placenta was intact (it was) and I was being monitored so they knew baby wasn't in distress. It was unexplained in the end, although they thought it might be down to the cevix opening quickly at one point - that might sense for you if you had a very quick labour?

I didn't have any good in mine when they broke naturally (second baby). First were meconium stained when waters were broken artificially when I was twelve days overdue. No blood either time though!

My guess would be that it was a mix of waters and bloody show since you said they happened at the same time. My waters were clear, but the bloody show that happened about 30 minutes later was bright red, like a heavy period day. If they had happened at the same time, the waters definitely would have looked red.

Thank you all for your replies. Sorry I didn't write it very well in my post, I had been having a shower for about three days leading up to labour but the day of labour I had a sweep and then lost my show then but it had stopped pretty much before my waters broke! But yes I guess it could still have been because of my show but I wasn't sure because there was so much of it xx
