well back to clinic again, i thought i was all nice and calm from the mornign school run untill they took my bp. it was a nice 184/115 they immediatly scrapped all other plans and made me go and lay down in the day unit.

they also ran an urgent pet panel. could someone fill me in on what this actually is. im sure its a pre eclampsia thing but as you can imagine noone wanted to scare me.

all the doctors thern saw me there. they upped my diabetic meds as they werent quite low enough.

after 90 mins of laying down with doctor who on my ipod my bp had come right down.

they let me come home on the basis that i see them weekly and my midwife in between. they mentioned that when or if it stays high then they will start medication to help it.

my urine was clear though and i felt fine its just so frustrating.

My blood pressure yo yo'd like mad from 25 weeks. It would be high at the midwives, they'd sent me to the hospital i'd be admitted it would come down, it drove me crackers, I was in hospital nearly every week.

I was eventually put onto labetalol to control it, first off I was on 100mg 3 x times a day, then at 35 weeks it shot up again and they doubled the dose to 200mg 3 x times a day. That controlled it till 38 weeks when it spiralled again and I was induced at 39 weeks.

I know its a pain, and god I hated trekking to the day unit !

I hope it stabalizes for you xx

thank you so so much. i was getting so worried that if i had high bp i would end up with pre eclamsia, its great to hear stories where people have done really well with high bp.

My bp has a habit of doing this! I mean yesterday went to mat unit for check up and it was 149/95 usually 110/70 so it was up for me then today it was 120/80. It has been going up and down since about 20 weeks. It is a massive pain in the backside i can tell ya! xxx

184/115 is very high. how often are you getting your bp and urine checked? it's so important to catch it early, the drs stressed how good it was that i caught my own pre-eclampsia so early as i was checking both bp and urine at home 2xweek. you might want to do that? if it's early, they can control it much better to keep baby in there as long as possible. if it gets high unchecked you can fit and loose the baby and/or die and unfun stuff like that. not that you're def going to get it though, but just in case you do!

I think I am at the beginning of this blood pressure rollercoaster! I really sympathise with you - you need to chill yet it's incredibly stressful! Really good to hear from ladies who have had high BP and haven't developed pre-eclampsia though :)

Ah, BP. The only stressful thing of my entire pregnancy!!

I am overweight and was very worried about my first midwife appointment, as such it was 140/90. Not a good start.

From there it came down to around 128/82 until around 37 weeks.
By this time I had had numerous arguments about my wanting a home birth, refusing Anti d injections, GTT's and being told my baby was huge.

At 37 weeks my BP shot up to 150/90 so I was promptly sent off for monitoring. Unfortunately the day unit was full so I ended up on the ward.
The ladies there told me there would be no way I'd get home that day. I said otherwise!
Anyway BP came down and I eventually saw a Dr 6 hours later.
They wanted to start me on Labetalol there and then and keep me in for montoring as my BP could drop dangerously low?!?!
No way said I.
So after more arguments I went home with an appointment for the day unit the following day, without labetalol.

Next day I am monitored for an hour, BP all over the place but was sent home an hour later with labetalol but this started the constant visits to the day unit where my BP never really settled but I eventually got the head midwife to "agree" to my homebirth.
I never had protein in my water, nor swelling or visual disturbances or headaches at any time.

I went into labour exactly on the due date I had calculated.
When I called a midwife out my BP was up but as they didn't have a large cuff it was probably inaccurate.
Abbie was born at 3.24pm after a 12 1/2 backache labour and no pain killers, weighing 7lb 7oz's.

they have started checking my bp while i am laying down as it is lower laying down.

they are checking my bp weekly and checking urine. my urine has always been clear and the pet profile they did was fine but they are keeping an eye out just incase anything happens. i have a little swelling but thats it.

angelae - why were you so anti hospital and labetalol? i'm glad things worked out for you but i have read other peoples experiences that ended very negatively. i was desperate not to go into hospital but after reading about a lady who had a fit from high bp and her baby died, it just wasn't worth the risk.

I wasn't anit labetalol and I did get it the next day. I was anti staying in hospital "just in case".
It was noisey, understaffed and not the most relaxing place on earth to be.
I'm was even less convinced of the need for me to stay and be monitored for the first few hours after taking my first dose when I was just handed the prescription by the Dr and sent to the chemist then home.
One Dr. was telling me (the previous night) that I had to be monitored after taking the drug, another Dr told me it wasn't necessary.

I don't like Dr's and do all I can to avoid seeing them which probably didn't help my BP.

I also read about the risks of problems with high blood pressure and spoke to an independent midwife about that and my homebirth plans, but at the end of the day it was a small risk and my personal choice was to take the labetalol and avoid hospitals.
It was my informed decision.

I do not deny there can be huge problems that come with high BP and urge anyone concerned to do what they think is best for them.
But I also believe that the medical profession love to scare people and in doing so protect their own career/hospitals from the posibility of litigation.

could it just be your getting yourself worked up about worrying if its high, even tho you feel relaxed your actually not?

i have 'white coat syndrome' which causes my blood pressure to rise if i even see or hear the word doctor, honestly its a nightmare! getting me into a doctors surgery is like torture, and when the dreaded bp monitor comes out i actually start sweating and going dizzy, not fun.

they constantly nag at me that its too high, i even had a 24hr bp test, which was in a pouch and i had to carry it around with me, and guess what...it proved my BP was completely normal when im at home, whereas it had been rediculously high in the surgery, and they finally believed me that it was just me getting worked up at the thought of having it done and being monitored!

so anyway, after all my waffling, if it keeps going high, ask them for a 24hr one, where you'll be at home or wherever doing your normal daily routine, and they can see what it naturally is.
