BMI and fertility help

just thought id share this because it was shared with me ... the NICE guidelines (uk) i dont know if its the same for us or elseware .. state that if you have a BMI of over 30 you should be advised loosing weight is the best option to conceiving as it can take a lot longer to conceive ....

It says ADVISE!!

not we wont treat people wwho are over bmi of 30..

i wonder if bringing this up with DR's would help everyone who is over 30 bmi in any way. i know im going to quote the NICE guidelines when i go for OH SA results the 19/12/13 !!!

Just a thought for you all to ponder!:hugs:

NB; i researched this myself before posting for you all also. so ive seen with my own eyes after being told!!!

its worth a try, but my doctor would not budge at all.
but you got to try and hopefully it will work. good luck x

the trouble with NICE guidelines is local PCT's make them up as they go along and you have to abide by their guidelines... until you start quoting them right back at them! lol

I have been told i am not entitled to IUI or IVF as DH has 2 children from a previous relationship... Thats local PCT guidelines NOT NICE guidelines... Also told i was not entitled to clomid because i ovulate on my own (short cycles, short lp)... again PCT guidelines not NICE ones!

When my FS started quoting them at me (wrongly quoting them as NICE and not PCT) i corrected him an quoted them right back at him!! :happydance: He soon changed his mind when i said i'd give up my right to clomid if he gave me back my right to IUI and IVF.... needless to say i got my clomid! lol I'll fight the next corner if and when it comes to it!

Knowledge is power when it comes to postcode lottery of what you can and can't have i recommend anyone going through this to read them! x

im going to read up and both guidelines today, might print them off so i can highlight my arguments lol.

Shells is right, the NICE guidelines are often far from what the PCT do. NICE recommend 3 attempts at IVF on the NHS. Here I got one. There was no budging on the BMI issue. Its a joke. I pay as much into the system as everyone else (and probably lots more than some) and yet I'm disadvantaged for living here. Combined with the fact that the nearest clinic is 100mile round trip.... GGGGRRRR!

Rant over. The system stinks.

Good luck and negotiate/fight your corner as much as you can! xx

I know from personal experience that the nhs stick to their guideline with high and low bmi, I was low and refused treatment, just do all you can now to lower a little at least then they can see your trying. Hope they are good with you.xx

Heather that's great that your doctor has been so supportive, I am crossing my fingers that I do too, sending lots of luck to you :flower:

Bonnie what a relief things have all settled down now, yes slimming world is more of a lifestyle rather than a diet, although I do still struggle with it, I will speak to them about metformin, I am torn with it really because I know it can play havoc with your system and hormones etc :flower:

Jennifer thanks for posting, it's interesting to read about the NICE guidelines, good luck with the SA results :flower:

Kaye, Shells, Pinkie and dlj2 I will fight my corner as much as I can  I have no idea what Suffolk PCT is like but I can guess so I don't hold out much hope, I will keep losing as much weight as possible and hope to get there. Good luck to you all :flower:
