Hi all,
I'm writing for advice as I'm really unsure what could be the cause of my daughter's recent ongoing crankiness. From the time she was born up until about 3 weeks she was such an easy baby and simple to please. She only cried for the usual, hunger, being dressed or occasional constipation.
For the past week or so things have gradually gotten more and more difficult. She barely sleeps more than 15 minute intervals throughout the day and is often unsettled (sleeps relatively well at night, however). The crankiness didn't usually start until the late afternoon to midnight-ish but the entire day today she was as grumpy as could be. Nothing we tried helped and we were really at a loss. Finally around 6PM she went to sleep and has been out since, probably exhausted from being awake all day and crying so much.
She's just over 4 weeks old and becoming much more aware of her surroundings so this could be quite common at this time. But, we're beginning to wonder if it could have anything to do with a recent bottle change. Once out of the hospital when she was 3 days old we started her on MAM bottles. I can't remember exactly when we made the switch but it must have been a week ago so around the time when she started to become difficult to soothe. Anyway, we made the switch as the teats have much too fast of a flow and she projectile spit up every now and then. We also don't like how hard MAM teats are. So we started using Nuk bottles. Since then she hasn't had any projectile spit up, probably because the teats have a much slower flow. We think she's much more gassy lately though and this could be why she's so cranky. I'm just so unsure about what to do. Could this be an issue of the bottle change or is it normal for babies around 1 month old to go through cranky periods? I'm really starting to wonder if we should switch back to MAM bottles again but then we'd have the problem of excessive spit up. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hey. My first thoughts were trapped wind. If the new bottles have helped reduce the sickness, I'd be inclined to see if I could reduce the wind before switching the bottles back. Rubbing their lower back can sometimes be better than tapping. I used to find popping my eldest across my knees(onto his tummy) and rubbing helped him, but didn't work on my daughter. Not sure where your from but if your in the uk you could try, infacol, dentinox and I think gripe water can be used from 4 weeks.

Absolutely... On Friday night we used a bottle we got free from Boots parenting club (an Advent one) and because we had been out we only had that one that had been sterilised. She didn't feed as well as normal with it and then all Friday night and Saturday morning she was so cranky and we didn't get any sleep at all :(

As a result she was still cranky yesterday and just started to settle down last night by about 2am. So we have thrown the bottle away as you can imagine and are now sticking to what she knows and has been happy with for the past 2 weeks. She has been so much more content and back to normal today as a result!
