:hi:

I'm so pleased that we are FINALLY in baby club :happydance: DS is 5 days old & I'm loving getting to know my little man :)

We were team yellow & I was pretty surprised when my bump turned :blue: I really had expected another girlie.

Anyway - I'm totally not prepared for boy nappies lol!! Girl bits I understand - I could tell when barrier cream was needed and I knew where extra poop might be hiding etc.

Boy bits are throwing me

His penis & testicles are darker than the skin around - is that normal or is his skin irritated? Should he be pointing up or down in his nappy?

Any other tips?

Lol - feel like a ftm all over again in the nappy department!

Congratulations on your new son!

Yes it's normal for them to be a different colour.

Pointing down! Always pointing down or else they end up with a wet belly in no time.

As for the extra poop I find the scrotum is the most awkward area which usually needs the most attention. It's all those little wrinkles!

Normal colour and point down. Expect to be weed on. Lots 😄 lol x

Here's a tip I learnt with my first..

Open the nappy, let air hit the bits, close the nappy and catch the pee!

Also, don't be alarmed if your boy has an erection, this is perfectly normal and normally means you're about to be peed on!

 omg this... the first time my eldest got an erection at a few days old i thought WTF!

but yeah its usually a different colour when they are born.. that should calm down after a while. ALWAYS pointing down.. not up, sideways etc.. otherwise its mess mess mess :haha: i would agree with the youll get peed on lots but ive been lucky with my last two and theyve never got me.. my first.. i was always covered in pee lol.

When they need cream theyre just like girls they will go red. The scrotum has to be the worst to get poo off bcause of all the little grooves BUT there is nothing worse than when they get poop in their willy. you have to be seriously seriously gentle.. pull the skin back a TINY amount and try clean it. if you cant with wet wipes stick them in the bath so soften it off.

oh and when you change the bum i always lift if ds's willy as they can sometimes get stuck to the ball sack or it can get a little white gunk there.

and best advice.. enjoy the time before he finds it  because then its hell trying to get them to leave it alone xxx

dont be afraid to touch if needed, my OH hates changing M when hes pood because you have to lift and wipe and move and wipe all while making sure hes not eating, and please be prepared that although you learn what your doing quickly, it never gets easier, they then want to touch their bits, pull their bits which can often hurt their bits, and as for the erection, i was mortified, i thought it happened later on, not newborn!!

:haha:

Haha - I have a lot to learn!!! Thanks ladies!

He's only we'd once when I took his nappy off so far - into his own mouth  I was in the hospital & needed a midwife to help clean him!!!

Never pull back the foreskin. Ever. :)

I only put cream on his bum and sometimes in the creases between his legs if it looks red.

And always down! Haha!

We had a girl second. I had no idea what to do (besides wiping front to back. Haha!) I had to call my sister. :haha:

Girls are way harder!! Even now I still struggle to clean Sophie properly when she's done a poo.

Never pull the foreskin back even a little. I have two boys and am confused by the PP who got poo stuck in the penis. I've never had this happen, it is usually just the tip so wipes off no need to retract anything and it is not at all advised to do so.

I think some boys have more foreskin than others maybe? Thomas has quite a lot, and lots of it hanging over the end, but his cousin who is 11 months older has a very short foreskin. I used to babysit him a lot and poo would get into it. He had runny poo a lot as he had intolerances. I used to just stick him in the bath.

I could've posted this question myself and with a 3w old Boy I've been weed on lots! And even when I put a cotton wool or wipe over it - he ends up soaking wet!

Nappy changes on boys are very entertaining!

Hehe yep definitely point it down, or he will end up with a wet top! :haha: It's strange having a different set of bits to clean than you're used to isn't it? I found the same with our surprise girly and am finding her a bit of a challenge to clean at times...

It's not advisable to even pull the foreskin back a tiny bit, as it's stuck to the head of the penis and this could case tiny tears and eventually problems - it's sort of like how a fingernail is on your finger. And as previously mentioned, omg at the poop that can get in to a wrinkly scrotum

Just make sure you lift the penis up to make sure there's no poop hiding underneath it and you should be good to go! :)

Unless he's circumcised then you DO need to pull back the foreskin to clean.

Thanks

So far I haven't had a wee soaking - maybe he learnt his lesson when it went in his own mouth. Or maybe he's just waiting for me to let me guard down!! :haha:

I think in getting the hang of it. But wow - there are a LOT of little wrinkles & hiding places for poop!!!

You absolutely don't have to pull back the foreskin. It's self cleaning and attached to end of the penis. You will more than likely end up hurting your baby if you try. Drs don't even pull back babies foreskins these days.

really? who told you that? every health care profession has told me under no circumstance to EVER pull the foreskin back, infact ive always been told to only touch it to move it to avoid accidently pulling it back, ive certainly never pulled it back to clean and my LB bits are fine!!!

ETA: i was told one of the reasons not to do it is because in some circumstance you can find your self being investigated for child abuse!!

We were told to never ever pull back foreskin!

If in doubt put them in the bath

I just had my first - a little girl, and we are hoping for one of each. If I get my wish, im in for a shock! I had no idea boys were so complex!!! :haha:

Even though I don't need it yet - thanks for the lesson girls!!!

In DS1 3 1/2 years alive so far I've never pulled back his foreskin, he's never had any sort of infection or UTI. The penis is designed to keep itself clean, pulling back the foreskin only increases the risk of introducing bacteria and also causes pain!

Up to now it's always had a good clean while he's been in the bath, as he's getting older he has showers more than baths so I'm teaching him how to wash himself properly.

Just to reiterate, NEVER pull back a baby boys foreskin
