DH is russian and his entire family speak little english and we speak russian in our home. Although we currently live in Uk we do spent a lot of time in russia.

DH is set on giving baby a russian name or a name that is used in russia, and in the russian format. If we have a little girl we both love Katya or Hanna.

However we are totally stuck with boys names and a big part of it is I want a name that the vast majority of people will be able to say.
We were thinking of Aleksandr, and using Alex/Alek as a nickname most of the time.

We also like Stefan, Ruslan and Ilarion, but I think that most people would mispronounce it and I don't want to make my baby's life harder.

Any suggestions on names, or on the names we like or how you would pronounce them.

Thanks

Hi!
I like Aleksander as a good dual cultural name with Alex rather than Sasha as the NN for a boy.
Denis is also good though pronounced more like Denise in Russian but he can use both pronunciations depending on the context.
I also think Max (Maxim) is a good choice:thumbup:
If I think of any others I will let you know:)

Aleksandr nn Alex/Alek - I would pronounce this Alek-san-der...i like and prefer Alex for nn.
Stefan - I would pronounce this Stef-fan...i like.
Ruslan - I would pronounce this Roos-lan...i like.
Ilarion - I would pronounce this Il-lah-rion...not keen.

Sorry if i'm wrong :)

Will come back with suggestions.

Hi! I'm not entirely sure how it is pronounced but I really like this name I came across in a book I was reading - Alyosha, which can be shortened to Lyosha [which I think is pronounced Lee-oh-sha?!] or even Lee.

Aleksandr is still at the top of our list. We have now added Roman, Nikolai, Alyosha, Luka and Maxim to our list.

Thanks guys

Hi there, just to say I have a very unusual name and if people don't pronounce my name correctly - it's never bothered me! In fact I find it a great conversation starter. I always found, and still find to this day, that people are interested in the origin of my name and we get talking :) Out of your list I ADORE Roman, I wanted it but DH wouldn't let me add it to our list! X
