Hi my 19 month old still has a bedtime breastfeed and I just found out I'm pregnant (5weeks) I'm wondering what will happen? Will I be able to still feed my toddler or should I stop? I do want to stop by the time she is 2.

It's really up to you & what works for you :) You can absolutely continue breastfeeding if it works for both you and your toddler. I'm 37 weeks and still breastfeeding my 2.5 year old. (Actually thought she self-weaned, but she recently started up again!) If you prefer to wean, you can do that too. I will say it gets a bit painful, but nothing that you can't handle (if you choose to). Or, your toddler might decide that she doesn't like the way your milk tastes anymore, or won't like it if you dry up, and she might self-wean.

Personally, I never thought I'd tandem feed, but I did want my daughter to self wean, so I just kind of went with it, figuring I can always wean if I choose to. Then, I was convinced we'd be tandem feeding when the new baby comes... and then I was convinced she had weaned and we were done (until 2 days ago). Now it looks like we might be looking at tandem feeding again. Who knows. All I know is, as long as it works for both mama & baby, that's all that matters.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, and good luck to you with whatever you decide! :flower:

Congratulations on your new baby!

My first daughter was 18 months when I became pregnant, and she was still nursing before nap and bed. It didn't last too much longer because breast milk can taste different when you are pregnant, and also can dry up quite a bit. She lost interest in a month or so.

Now Im pregnant again, and my daughter, who is almost 2, doesn't seem to want to stop. I am 14 weeks, and I still have milk. We nurse before nap and bedtime, and it's just really part of the routine, a way to be close and settle down.

I want to wean soon, but I don't want to stress her out. I am trying to incorporate other things into our bedtime routine that will eventually replace the nursing. I am also cutting it off after a few minutes. I just tell her its time for a song, and she sits in my lab, and we sing and cuddle.

You can definitely nurse while pregnant. Just let your Dr know. I think there are things to look out for when you are much closer to delivery, for example nipple stimulation can bring on contractions.

I am hoping to get a break before the baby arrives. I have been either pregnant or nursing since June 2011!

I breastfed throughout my pregnancy. The milk can sometimes change taste or dry up completely, so some toddlers so wean themselves during this time. My milk dried up in the second trimester but mine continued dry nursing and now baby is here we are tandem feeding :)

Sounds familiar! I was pregnant 2010/11 and have been breastfeeding since 2011. Though my son "only" nurses a few times a day atm.

I'm also at the early stages of pregnancy and I am still breastfeeding once or twice a day my 22 month old daughter. She shows no sign of stopping, so I guess we'll just see how we go :) x
