ok, so i am 36 weeks pregnant and am getting a bit worried on the breast pump i bought.
Its a manual Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature Breast Pump and it looks easy to use but i am soo worried tat i wont express any milk or that i won even know how to use it when i need to. I know it sounds daft as it looks so straight forward but what if i do something wrong and should i test it out before the baby comes.??

Please help

I thought about testing mine out before baby got here too. It's a strange contraption to me right now. I think I will do it in private a few times so I won't feel so awkward with it. Does your doctor's office have a lactation consultant available? Or any breastfeeding classes? That may help you.

It's very easy to use, I would just have a read through instructions and perhaps see how it comes apart etc for sterilisation, I never did this as I didn't plan to use it until BF was established. I ended up having to learn it all at midnight one day with a very hungry upset bubs, after a couple of weeks no sleep, this was not much fun, but I still managed to use it and it expressed fine :flower:

I took my tommy tippee back as I couldn't express two drops!! I
got a medela and nver looked back!

I wouldn't try and express just now, it'll just be hard and get you frustrated! Plus you'll only be producing colostrum in tiny amounts.

Wait until your milk has come in after the birth and your supply has been stimulated by bubs. Then pump away. And remember tiny babies only drink tiny amounts!
xxx

I had the advent and it was to fiddly.I have the tommee tippee and never loaked back. Easy to assemble and once you got the hang of it it is fab.I find you do need to get all boob in the rose though as any air and you loose the suction x

Remember though expressing isnt recommended for the 1st 4/ 6 weeks hand expressing is better xx

Same here, and I desperately needed a pump for exclusively expressing.

The Tommee Tippee manual is a total pain to clean, and the worst ive had out most of them ive used

Im waiting till after bubs is born to buy a pump incase for any reason im unable to breast feed.

Im still torn on whether to buy a manual or electric one, i wont be using it alot and electric ones are soo much more expensive!

I wouldn't try to express until after bubs is born. It has been known to start contractions. The hardest part of the breast pump is getting all the parts put together when you go to use it, cones, hoses, bottles, valves. It really is much easier than it looks though. I would do a few trial runs to put it together and ready to use though. You'll probably be doing that in the middle of the night a few times.

I have a Medela, so I'm not sure if all of the parts are the same though. Love my Medela double electric!! :)

I don't know where everyone is located, but if you are in the US, the WIC program lends out double electric breast pumps for the duration of the time you need it. They also give out free manual ones, if you don't need it very often. I would definitely look into it. Saves a lot of money! :)

we went with a medela electric pump, but i am going back to work full time after 3 months and so i will be using it constantly. i have heard that a manual pump is fine for people who are only pumping occasionally. in my childborth class last week we were discussing them and everyone had the same fears as you, not knowing how to use it. but the nurse said that at most we should read the instructions to become familiar with the use that way, because actually trying the pump out now can bring on contractions and lead to early labour. also, most hospitals (here in the US at least) have lactation consultants in the hospital that can help you with breastfeeding and pumping during your stay after labour.
