Our insurance covers a breast pump and I'm trying to decide the Medela or a spectra S2.

I got a Medela with our first and it worked great in the beginning but I wasn't able to produce much when pumping, I did breastfeed our daughter until 2 though.

Spectra is a closed system, medela (retail) is not. I have heard great things about the spectra. I would not use an open system pump.

Google image search "mold in medela motor".

Thank you for your input! Maybe I was lucky to never run into a mold problem with my Medela but a closed system sounds like a much better idea!!

I had the medela swing with my other 3 kids and loved it! Lost it in a house move so now need a new one!

I hadn't heard of the spectra are they good and which one is the one to go for? x

There is just the S1 and S2, one has a batter pack and one is plug in only, otherwise they are identical. If your insurance covers it, it's probably the plug in one.

From other places ive heard the spectra hands down. Its going to be the one i buy for sure

From what I've read so far after posting this is that the Spectra is amazing. It's gentler on the nipples, which I remember my Medela being painful in the beginning but not terrible. And it's quieter. I'm very curious to compare them.

There are 3 different medical equipment companies I'm allowed to order from and one of them has the battery pack one but it's out of stock and back ordered. I don't really plan on pumping while out somewhere so I'm okay with having a plug in.

Excellent! I'm going for it too :)

And the battery adds weight, just another point :D And just how many places out and about have no plug ins?

I can't find many here in the UK, can only see the S1, S2 and the dew350?

Haha Misspriss for real, there are plug in's everywhere. I don't really plan on pumping away from home anyways

Laurenmomma - The S2 is the one my insurance offers for the Spectra brand, I don't really know much about it though.

I had a Spectra 9 with my son and it was great. It's a tiny battery operated pump. It sounds like you don't have the option of that particular pump, but I'd buy Spectra again based on my experience. I liked having a closed system, it felt safer and now I can resell it if I want to. The only thing I didn't like was the bottles. The measurements seemed off and they leak, but I poured into bags for freezing or pumped straight into Kiinde bags if we were out and just used different bottles.

I went with the spectra :) It doesn't seem like it's very friendly with other bottles but I'll probably use bags for storing anyways to pour into bottles.

You can use pretty much any pumping kit with it, a girl in my breastfeeding group bought the medela adapter and uses the pump pieces for the medela with her spectra.
