Does anyone have any any reviews on breast pumps good or bad?

I'm thinking about the Tommee Tippee (electronic) but would like any ideas for others.

Thanks

i had the tommee tippee manual pump and it was completely rubbish but not sure how good the electric one is i brought a medela swing second hand from ebay for 27 pounds and its brilliant :)

I have the Avent Double Electric and love it! I've also tried the Medela Pump in Style and its pretty good too but I prefer my Avent.

I started out with the Tommee tippee electric and thought it was OK until my sister gave me her Medela swing.

The TT one works in the opposite way that a baby feeds. There are three speed settings from slow to fast and you are supposed to do them in succession 1, 2 then 3. This isn't how a baby feeds at all so can become quite painful (I found). The Medela imitates the baby's natural sucking rhythm so it starts of fast fast fast then once you see the milk coming out your nipples you press the let down button and it changes to long drawn out sucks.

With the TT you can't see first of all if anything is actually coming out of your nipples (the medela funnel is clear and you can see through it). Then because of all the white plastic over the bottle you can't actually see if any milk is coming out. I had to express in front of a mirror which wasn't always the easiest thing to do or get my other half to watch to make sure I was actually getting anything. When I wasn't and supply was low, I didn't know, carried on pumping and got extremely sore nipples which then affected me feeding my son.

The only good thing for me with the Tommee Tippee was that my son was fed from the TT closer to nature bottle which attached to the pump. I used medela bags on the swing until I bought a medela bottle but he wouldn't take that at first and still preferred the TT one.

I've since got a Medela freestyle double pump (for when I go back to work) and it's brilliant.

i have the TT manual and i find it a great pump its gotten me through 2 kids so far and i love it still,
using a manual pump is an art and can take a while to master but once you do i find its quicker and easier and quieter than an electric pump and so much easier to clean and more portable too.

if you want to go the electric route get a hospital grade pump, the Ameda Lactaline is a great pump and the milk doesnt come in contact with any moving parts so its much easier to clean and more sterile,
Please if you buy a Medela buy it new and keep the proof of purchase.

Regarding borrowing a breast pump, both the FDA and Medela classify Pump in Styles as single user pumps. They are an ''open loop'' system (unlike the rental pumps which are a closed loop system). There are cases where milk can back up into the tubing, and into the internal breast pump diaphram, which cannot be removed and sterilized.
That being said, milk backing up into the tubes is pretty rare, and the owner of the pump would likely know if this had happened. In reality, many people borrow or buy used Pump in Styles, and simply buy new tubing, horns, and bottles, etc.

It's all based on the risk of disease transmission the used pump user is willing to bear (and the risk is very small).

I had the old model of the lactaline and compared to the actual ameda hospital grade pumps; I wasn't too impressed, there is a new model now but it costs twice as much as the old one was when I bought it so I am hoping they have improved the suction variability etc for the cost increase? This is the Ameda pump I just love (its the proper hospital one which I have used in the past) but its incredibly pricey and NOT portable, this is the cheapest I've ever seen it and if only I had £600 knocking about...

Well I can dream ;). I have an NUK manual, I'm very very pleased with it and I can get more out than with any other pump though with me I'm one of those that if I don't pump everday then I can only get out 1oz a session, in the early days though I can get 3oz out in a couple of minutes with this pump so quite impressive.

I have the ameda purely yours. I like it quite a bit but have found that unless I get the holder for the pump, I have a hard time changing the speed/suction. once I got the special bra that holds the bottle part I have no problem.

Good luck in your search
