brown spotting 7 week ultrasound scare

I started having brown spotting on and off for the past 3 days. It only shows up occasionally when i wipe and I've been wearing a panty liner to keep track and only had a few spots. Went in for early ultrasound today and while I am supposed to be at 7 weeks today they detected my baby at 5 weeks and 3 days. And couldn't detect a heart beat. They also detected that I have an abnormal looking sac. Not sure what this could mean. They ordered a blood test to check my hCG levels and will be checked again Thursday to see if they have dropped. I am told it could be that I am just not as far along as i thought or it could be a miscarriage. Has anybody had anything similar to this happen? I'm not sure what to think. I haven't had any cramping or red blood. I just wish I knew what could be going on.
