I am trying to breastfeed Julian but have ended up supplementing feedings with formula and am afraid of giving up completely! He doesn't seem to enjoy breastfeeding. He gets mad after a couple minutes and has a burp if I stop and try to burp him. These keeps happening throughout the feeding. Every few minutes he has a burp. Is this normal for breastfeeding? Is there something I am doing wrong?

I don't ever feel full like I have so much milk, even if I go long between feedings. If I pump I am not getting more than an ounce. What to do?

Is he making clicking sounds when he feeds? Have you had your latch checked? :)

Well if you are supplementing, then your body is going to think it is producing enough, even though your LO wants more. He also has to work harder at gettting milk from the breast than he does a bottle, so that is why he might be getting frustrated. Bottles provide a much easier flow than the boob.

If he is getting that much air, maybe your latch is off. Brenn didn't burp all that much. Make sure his mouth is totally sealed around the nipple, and you want a all the nipple and a good portion of the areola in his mouth as well.

Pumping is best left untill your supply is firmly establised round about 6 weeks or later. Remember that your LO can get more milk out of you than a pump. Maybe try looking at him or a photo of him while pumping, I know this helps a friend of mine.

I have larger breasts so I end up having to kind of clamp the breast with my hand so he doesn't get overwhelmed by boob. so I guess I kind of flatten out what he can hold on to. It was worked fine until this week. My hand ends up being sore from holding that position for so long.

He did awesome at the 2pm feeding and ate happily for about 40 minutes. Then at 5:30 he flipped out the moment breastfeeding started and was not about it whatsoever. I gave him a bottle of formula after fifteen minutes of trying, and then tried to express. I used the manual medela one and after a while of pumping, only had about 3/4 oz. Do you think it could be that my boobs are too big for the pump?

Sometimes standard flanges are too large or small. Have a look at the pictures here:

If you think the flange is too small, you could try changing to a pump that has a changeable flange (like a Medela one). I've got extremely large boobs and expressed successfully.

The let down reflex is greatly affected by stress - when upset or worried I could only get drops. The upset over the feed could have caused you not not be able to get much milk. Also, fulltime breastfeeding mothers often only get 1oz or so from pumping. A baby is much more effecient. Most also find they pumpless later in the day.

Hae you seen a breastfeeding counsellor? They can often advise on good positions for large breasts. I find having LO led on my lap on his side, with his tummy cacin me works well. I start with his nose in the middle of my body, then move him out until he meets the nipple. This way, he gets more niple in and he doesn't get a noseful of boob.

When my LO gets very hungry, he gets fussy and faffy at the breast. AWhen do you feed LO? What hunger cues are you getting? We find it best to feed at the first sign of hunger (usually him rubbing his face on my chest).

Keeping going Mummy, you are doing great :hugs:

asacia, thanks for that website. I think the larger flanges might really work.

This time the whole process is going 1000x better than last time. With my 3 1/2 yr old, I only lasted two weeks with bleeding and cracked nipples the whole time.

I try to get ready to feed as soon as he is hungry but sometimes it is five or more minutes before I can get everything situated.

With my son, my supply seemed so much higher than it has ever been this time. And I just had a cheap evenflo single electric pump.

Hi, I have very large boobs (double G) and a Medela pump and it fits fine, though they do say to get larger flanges for larger breasts. Also you say that you are leaving more time between feed to have more milk when really it works the other way round, the less time between feeds the more you have or the more your LO feeds the more production. I might be every half hour or hour with a 1 month old though my 9 month old has just fed 1 hour since the last time!
Good luck, you are doing great and it will get easier!
