What age do you think would be ok/have you put your child into a bunk or a cabin bed?

Reason I ask is that we're movng house and the kids rooms aren't huge, not such a problem for Molly right now, but for Seth one of the options Ive been looking at is a cabin bed with some storage underneath.

We've been mainly looking at these:
Lots of storage space but quite high

not so high, better steps but not as muchh storeag space

I would say 4 - Earl and new LO are going to need bunks at some point (room is JUST big enough for 1 single and 1 toddler bed but no other furniture lol), but we'd considered a mid-sleeper with the toddler bed (obviously a lot lower) underneath. I would do this from the new one being about 15-18 months, so Earl would be nearly 4.

If Seth is able to manage steps confidently the rest of the time he should be fine. My only worry would be toilet in the middle of the night, and him falling, but I'm sure that they would get used to it.

We are getting new beds for our girls that share a bedroom........... and we are either going to go for bunk beds or cabin beds, by the time we get round to redeorating and buying the new furniture my eldest will be 7 and my youngest will be 3.

obviously top bunks should only be used for children over 6 but with cabin beds im not sure if there is an age but i would be happy for my 3 year old to sleep in certain ones.

My eldest daughter would like this cabin bed bit pricey though or we may get the bunkbed which can be used as two singles.

Your first link i think is too high for a child under 6 and the 2nd link is better but what i prefer cabin beds with more protection (like in my 1st link) so they can roll off and fall out if you know what i mean x

Not sure about over there but here in the States it is manufactuer recommended that under 6 not sleep on the top bunk. I would think the first one is much too high for a 3 year old to handle. The second one might be okay, it only looks a bit taller than a regular bed.

The second one u showed looked alot safer than the first.
I'm not a fan of bunk or cabin beds I fell out of mine as a kid and broke my arm but I was playing onit so was my foult but I just don't like them now lol.

I think it depends on the child. My son is very physically agile and I would have been happy for him to sleep on a top bunk at 3/4. One thing I would say though is make sure you get one with a removable ladder! Once your youngest is toddling she'll want to climb it.

we had a triple bunk bed (small double bottom and single on top) which you couldnt split in two and my eldest daughter was two when we bought it and she slept in the bottom and the ladder was removed until she was older no problems......when we had our youngest daughter we again removed the ladder when she could walk BUT at 14 months old she still managed to get up to the top ...... i heard 'mama, mama, mama' went to see what she was doing and my heart stopped when i saw her standing up on the top bunk!!!!! luckily she had the sense NOT to try and get down! i had nightmares and feeling sick and what if moments for ages.......this is a reason i will only consider bunk beds with a child over the age of 3 in the house :haha:

We have just bought a midi sleeper for Esther from Marks and Spencers. We have been looking for ages and love the fact that all the storage is removable.

We are aiming for her to go into it when she is 4 - maybe earlier depending on how agile she is - she loves climbing so do see any problem in her getting in and out of it.

I personally wouldn't put her in a high sleeper until at least 6, maybe even 8.

Ours boys are a similar age and I would be happy for LO to sleep in either of those beds to be honest. He doesn't fall out of his bed, and with the higher one you posted it looks like there's an edge round it that would be higher than the mattress, iykwim. At some point this year I will be getting a similar one for boy, or maybe bunkbeds as his room is quite large, and it's just for visitors really!

I honestly think it depends on the child, you know Seth best

My daughters went into a mid sleeper (this one, but they no longer sell it: https://www.cabin-beds.org.uk/john-lewis-haven-cabin-bed.html) when they were 3. This bed was solid and had nice high sides with slanted steps so getting in and out wasn't a problem and the bed was very safe (IMO)

Out of the 2 you posted, I think the 2nd one (Rylie) is safer for a younger child x

I agree the second one does look safer and I like the fact it has bigger steps, BUT there isnt a lot of storage - it would kind of defeat the object because I reckon we'd still have to buy some other furniture for him.

The next one someone posted above looks pretty much perfect tho :)

because it has a little wardrobe, chest of drawers and a pull out desk for when he's a bit older.

I didnt realise next did beds actually!

I have been looking at ones with the little slide coming off it... I know he can get up the stairs and he is more than able to get down but he is known to sleepwalk. He has been fine in the past and even managed to climb over 2 stairgates and get down the stairs without doing himself any damage when he's asleep, but the thought is in the back of my mind.

Thanks for the opinions :) I also thought the first might be a bit too high just didnt know if I was being a bit over protective or something!

The next one is very similar to the one bought from marks & spencer. I like those ones because all the bits actually move out from underneath the bed. We had to discount alot of beds because Esther's room literally just fits the length of her bed in. Anything on either end of the bed is lost room because you can't access it.

It's not on the M&S website at the moment but it's worth seeing if you can still get the one we ordered-it's a little cheaper and having seen both of them, a little more sturdy.

thanks hun we have a big m&s nearby so ill have a look in there :) xx

Im not a fan of bunk beds in young children after reading about the little boy who accidentally hung himself when he fell out and the sheet got caught! Just thought I'd share! Nor looking to scare anyone!

:/ well thankfully the only ones Ive been looking at have bars to stop him falling out. At the end of the day we dont have a lot of choice as we just have no space and Im confident he wouldnt fall out, I was more concerned about if he got up in the night & slipped down the steps tbh which is why Id prefer proper steps or even a slide than a little ladder for him.

The sleep walking would make me hold off on a high bed, especially since he is climbing over things as it is. I think he's quite lucky to not have gotten hurt when we sleepwalked over the gate and down the stairs. Maybe see what your pediatrician suggests, purely due to the sleepwalking factor.

We are getting a bed for Tyler similar to first one you posted,he's 3 and I don't have any worries with him falling out,he never gets out of bed for a pee in the night. The first night I would be a little scared as to how it would go even though I know he'd be fine!

I too fell out of a bunk bed (which had a side to it) when I was younger and broke my arm! It wouldn't stop me from buying one for the boys!

My little brother fell out of a toddler bed & broke his arm lol :dohh: obviously I dont want it to happen but Im concious of the fact it might happen if he fell out of his regular bed anyway.

I think we're going to go with the next one someone posted earlier :) xx
