Evening everyone!

Quick question for any mummies who have been using Aptamil formula with their babies. My little boy, Noah is a week old today and he seems to be constantly hungry! he will have 3oz of Aptamil 1 and sleep for around 3 hours which is perfect really for a newborn, but there are cetain times of the day where he is very sloppy at feeding and will only take 1-2oz, fall asleep and wake up starving!!

I know Aptamil do a Hungry baby formula but i don't understand what they class as a hungry baby? What does the formula do differently? Would say 3oz of the hungry baby formula fill Noah up better?

I've looked on their website etc and it really doesn't explain what its all about!! I even looked on the box in boots today and still it didn't say so i am very confused!

Anyone help?

The hungry baby formulas are thickened so they lie heavier on their tummies and make the babies feel fuller longer... well that's the idea anyway although my baby didn't seem to think this!

My HV recommended we try it at 9 wks so I think 1 wk is a bit young for the hungry baby milk. (?) It says on the box "may help delay early weaning."

Thanks Jen!
Yeah i wish they would put this sort of information on the box as it is so confusing as a new mum as to what to do! I read the bit about can prevent early weaning but they kinda need to elaborate on that and say what its used for and how it can help etc otherwise i would have bought some today and possibly done the wrong thing!!

Will definatly have a word with the HV/MW whichever one next vists first and see what they can suggest!

Any other suggestions are most welcome though as its something which is very new to me and as you can imagine, new mummy here is fretting a little bit!

Hungry baby milk is just a bit thicker so stays in their tummy longer but it can also cause their poos to be a bit firmer as well.

I would just stick to the normal milk just now and feed him when he is hungry, he is still very small so still very unpredicable regarding feeds!

I agree about the info on the tubs though, its rubbish and the website is pants too

I think the hungry baby formula has a different kind of milk protein in it which takes longer to break down - so makes baby feel full for longer. I would stick with the regular stuff since your baby is so young - hungry baby formula might be too much for his little stomach to deal with. Just feed him when he's hungry and if he keeps draining all of his bottles then add an extra ounce of milk. Most babies don't drink the same amount every feed - sometimes they snack and sometimes they take a full 3 course dinner! Bit like us grown-ups really! xx

just to give you an idea. i started my son on his at about 4 weeks and it really helped us. xx

Thanks very much everyone! Your posts have been most helpful. It's so difficult with a new baby and I just want to be sure he's not hungry! My mind was put at ease today as HV visited and he's put on 4oz of weight since he was born 9 days ago!
May look into the other formula if still really hungry after his 6 week checks with the HV.

I was using aptamil from day 3, but i too had the same problem with karl being hungry still.

I switched to aptamil hungry, i really found a difference and he seems alot more full and content, sometimes he doesnt finish his full bottle but he stil goes 3-4 hours without getting hungry again.

Hope everything works out
x

we started maddi on the hungry baby after 3weeks, and she has been great with it, slept through since 6weeks, and from the 3weeks she was doing 11 till 5:30 (no 7/8 - 8/9) i cant recommend it highly enough, it just helps them fill fuller longer. i no my hv wasn't impressed i switched, but maddi has been so great, and still wasn't weaned till 6months i couldn't ask for anything more x

edit - i also found a routine so much easier with it x

I forgot to add. Since switching to hungry, karl sleeps 10:30pm til 7am everyday, then 3-4 hours through the day.

My hv doesnt even know ive switched, if she doesnt like it then tough i know my baby :)

Thanks very much!
That is really inspiring to know! Noah seems to settle now a lot better and will sleep at least 4 hours a night between 2/3am till 6/7am which for a newborn i think is pretty good! may have just been that he was hungry due to not suckling properly on the bottles or getting sleepy as he was trying to feed. However i will still not rule out changing him over in a few weeks time when hes a little bit older as i still think sometimes he is hungry even after 4oz of Aptamil 1 yet he won't take anymore. Its such a trial and error game!

Maybe he just has no room left in his wee tummy?

Also unfortunately the Aptamil 2 didn't make my baby go any longer! He still got hungry a couple of hours later! It's worth a go though. A lot of mums at baby clubs I go to just use hungry baby milk for the evening feed to help with sleeping and the normal milk through the day.

Yeah, thats a thought, I may get a box from ASDA's next time i go over just to try him with on his night feeds because for some reason his 2am feed seems to be the one which causes the most problems!
During the day he seems satisfied with sometimes only 2oz, its like he snacks sometimes and has a full meal others! We will get there, its early days :)
