Can a MW notice an Incompetent Cervix?

I want to find out.
I remember a doctor telling me years ago that my cervix is very short which has lead me to worry now.
My MW didnt want to check and literally the doctor wont check either.
Am I to lose my baby (I sure hope not) until something happens?
I just want to find out if all is okay or not!

Can a MW see if the cervix is alright or not?
And must a vaginal ultrasound be done to establish this?
Can a MW miss an incompetent cervix by a normal check?

sorry hun i have no idea but didnt want to read and run

if you are not getting any joy i woudl see another doc and ask to be referred - not sure about the midwife noticing it during a 'normal' check as they dont really go there until the end

:(
It just seems so difficult to get proper healthcare here when you dont pay so much (max £80 per year then you go for free) and seems like patients get to suffer.
It really gone to my mind what that doctor told me that time about a really short cervix.
I'm not sure what to do.
:( I just want to find out if it's okay or not. I would hate to go worrying for so many weeks!
And how much would I not blame myself (and the MW and doctor) if something happened to my baby?

I think they need to do a vaginal ultrasound to measure your cervical length, or at least that's what they had to do for me (have had surgery there in the past so it was required I get it looked at). I don't know that a MW can tell otherwise but I would definitely mention it and request it be checked.

when I had my big US scan at 19 weeks they checked my cervix. I was worried about it because every female in my family gave birth really early due to this. As I say they looked when I had my scan and told me my cervix looked good.

They can check your cervical length via ultrasound and no you dont need a vaginal probe. Abdominally is adequate enough :)

Can they see this on a common Ultrasound or does it have to be transvaginal?
I have my scan on 21st december but no clue if I can make the sonographer check my cervix:/

Ahhh I just hope I can make the sonographer check it for me, I keep having this pain inside "downthere" and im irritated and having problems but my MW and doctor wont do anything about it.
:(

In Sweden they just check for incompetent cervix if you lost babies in second tri before, I have no intentions losing my baby because of incompetent regulations here regarding health care.

Hiya, I think you've seen my previous post about this, I suffered with an incompetent cervix in my pregnancy.
The most reliable way to check for an incompetent cervix is through a transvaginal ultrasound - you can do it abdominally but it is not very accurate
If it is somethign that really worries you then you might have to do the same as I did and pay for some treatment privately. If oyu look at my previous post it gives information on cervical lengths and the treamtent I was told ot have depending on the length. I hope this helps xx

Thank you for your advice, only problem, private healthcare costs as much as governmental and I had private gyns to turn me down, it seems when not paying a lot extra they get negative set to help people unless really urgent.
So I feel like I am in a dead end, I might get my MW to check but if they cant see if a cervix is incompetent by just looking then why even bother?
:(

Maybe I should just try to forget about that previous comment about my short cervix and try to relax and hope for the best as it seems impossible to get this checked?

your midwife will not be able to tell, she will be able to tell if it is opening but nothing else, otherwise you need scans, i have had ultrasounds to check my cervix length and they have checked on a normal ultrasound, as long as you have a full bladder then can check it, here they dont like to do trans-vaginal ones if you already have cervical problems as they dont want to cause any more problems

Thanks, do you know if a gynecological check can make things "bad" downthere?
I might need two of those in a timespan of 6 days, going to one place to get checked for std.s then want my MW to check my cervix how it looks like.
Do you know if that is a bad idea?
And do you think a std doctor (just a general doctor-not a gynecologist) can check if the cervix looks alright?

my doctors have avoided going near my cervix unless it has been necessary. NOt sure that just a general doctor can tell much about your cervix as when mine has been looked at it has always been done by specialists

i have just had an emergency stitch put in due to short cervix, the best way is a internal scan. if you have already been told about it in the past they should take you seriously, when you book in tell th midwife you want to be referred to a obs and gynae consultant clinic they cant refuse, if they do complain and make a fuss they will soon listen x

i too am worried about this and have spoken to a very useless midwife who advised me that when i go for antenatal care my concerns will be addressed and if im still worried i can go under ob/gyn consultancy care for check ups.
its part of te care in the uk though.not sure if you mentioned it or not but are you from the uk???

yes sweety, a top obs and gynae consultant had her hand up there the other day and literally said its very short, we need to intervene now and with that i was whisked away to theatre. now she only could tell by feeling as she has like 30 years in the business, if you are seriously worried then make a nuisance of yourself they will see you to keep you off their back.

you can also pay for a private cervical scan then take the finding to your obs/gynae consultant when you see him x

Unfortunately in this incompetent country I cant pay privately to get my cervix scanned:(
And my gyn wont do it as i havent lost a baby in second tri (not yet ANYWAY:()

I think so too, but apparently they dont. I suppose I just have to keep my fingers crossed that nothing will happen.
I tried to get an another doc to do it which just redirected me back to my gyn... :(
