Can baby be placed on mother after C Section rather than passed to dad?

Hiya,

Sorry if this is a silly question!

I'm 33+ weeks at the moment and find out on 16th Aug whether or not I'm going to have to have a C Section due to a low lying placenta. I've had 2 scans since the 20w scan when it was first spotted, and apparently it's still very low so i've not really got much hope of it actually moving.

Anyways, I've been thinking about the section, and was wondering if it was possible or "allowed" for baby to be placed on me for skin to skin (assuming everything's ok) after he's born or if the baby has to be wrapped up and given to my OH? I'm in the UK if that makes a difference.

TIA :flower:

hi im in the uk and had 2 sections and with both of mine they have always been passed to me first, with my last section i made it clear to the surgeon as he was actually doing it that if he can lower the curtain so i can see her come out and be placed on me right away, which they did. just let them know at the time and it wont be a problem

Yes, there is something called a 'natural c-section'. Look it up and talk to your midwives about it. Unless there is some sort of obvious emergency, it should be no problem to have skin-to-skin right away. You might just have to remind them of it a few times to make sure they do it according to your wishes.

Actually, I just randomly came across this and thought it might be helpful read for you. (Ignore the fact it's on a delayed cord clamping site unless that's important to you as well, it's about natural c-sections and skin-to-skin).

Not a silly question at all! I didn't know either :) Hopefully you can hold your baby first.

They put my LO straight on me then took him to be cleaned and weighed after a good 10 minutes of skin to skin before OH had a cuddle. :flower:

They didn't with me. They cut the cord and then showed her to me and then cleaned her up and my husband was able to hold her.

They gave my son to me but my hands were too shaky (not sure if it was nerves or anesthetic) but I couldn't hold him. When I was all stitched up though and in my wheely bed they put him on me to go to the recovery room.

with me they gave to oh i got to hold him when it was all over.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I really thought it was the norm for baby to be given straight to daddy, and if I'm honest it made me a little bit sad! This has cheered me up quite alot!

Thanks for this! I shall have a look through x

yea this has cheered me up a bit too! i was so adament that i was going to try for vbac as i wanted imediate skin to skin but if i can push for that with a c section, then im more open for a csection this time. i just hated last time i didnt get to cuddle lily for atleast an hour as they were doing checks on her. im diabetic so chances are ill be having a c section

This has been one thing that I was worried about. I am due to see doc tomorrow (if I haven't gone into labour overnight- highly doubtful) as she said if I hadn't delivered by due date she would schedule a section. And today I have felt particularly sad about this, I think if I had of had a bit more time and she had said definately a section a while ago I would have been fine, it's more been the uncertainty which I know is silly as no one knows for sure what is going to happen. But the main thing that concerned/ upset me is that thought of holding her/ skin to skin straight away being taken away. Obviously my baby's health is priority and if she needs help thats fine and overrides everything. But knowing that I can ask for this time has helped me feel better about going to my appointment tomorrow. Thank you ladies :flower:

In Switzerland I had a couple of minutes with baby laying near my chest so I could say hi and kiss but then he went to dad while I was closed up and got my legs back. It was ok, time to rest after the drugs and to reflect on the most amazing 20 minutes ever.
