To save Brooke from being so distressed when she wants her milk as you have to make them up from fresh & also to save time.. can I put boiling water in all the bottles in the morning & leave them on the side ready to use, so just need to add the milk when she wants feeding?

I've heard some mums still make up feeds in advance even though they say your not supposed to any more (how did we all survive!?) but not sure how to go by it..

Is Brooke in any kind of routine? I ask bcoz u could maybe boil the water half hour b4 she is due her feed and then by the time she has her bottle it will be cool enough to give to her.

We did boil the water and keep the bottles in therma bags to keep them warm when Kai had night feeds and I still do that when we go out. I pre scoop the formula into an avent powder tub.

It's not recommneded as the idea of using boiling water (over 70 degrees) is to kill and bacteria that is in the milk powder.

I make 3 at a time, I boil the water and add the powder then shake and leave to cool and I just heat them up hen I need them. My HV said that that was fine to do.

i make up what rhys needs every morning - i havent had any problems yet :) x

Please no harsh comments but...

I make Jack-Jack's bottles with room temperature water bottles. No boiling, no heating and he is alive, well and never been sick.

(PS - Sterilizing is not required or recommended as much here in the states as it is in the UK.)

Tin says 40 degrees not 70. I boil water keep it until it reaches around 40, then keep it in a water flask. Omar prefers warm milk. I always prepare fresh feeds. Sometimes when we'r out, I just use bottled water at room temperature.

I have always made the bottles up with water then added powder when needed... :flower:

My HV advised me to do it this way. I use cartons though so i can't really comment

I make mine up with powder and then store in the fridge. Then just heat to room temp (35 secs in microwave) when she wants one :)

I steralise all DD's bottles, make up the water, then use tommee tippee milk pots to store ready measured amounts of milk...just leaving me to put the powder in, ready to warm up! So much easier and organised, it makes feeding easier and if I have to rush out the door, I have bottles ready to go. I don't have to spend 3 hours getting ready!!

I've wondered about this too.

I currently make up the bottles (water and add powder) and then store them in the fridge, warming them up when my LO wants feeding.

It would be much easier if I could just add the powder to a bottle of prepared water as and when LO wants feeding - but I thought you were meant to add the power to very hot water, surely if you prepared the water in the bottles ahead of time then the water is just room temp?

The water is cooled boiled water, which I then reheat when I have added the powder. I do not add the powder until she needs feeding because of the risk of bad bacteria growing because of the warm formula etc.

My bottle routine is 1: boil water while bottles seteralise.
2: Pour slightly cooled boiled water into bottles.
3: Measure scoops of powder into Tommee Tippee pots, which I then have sat in the cupboard ready for when she needs feeding.

It is so much easier and more reliable than waiting for bottles to cool if too hot and then you have bottles to hand in case she needs an extra feed or there is an emergency and you have to go out quickly. The bottles of water and pots of powder are ready to go right there. All you then have to do is mix the powder with the water in the bottles, warm them in boiling water, or in microwave (people can judge me for warming my babys bottles in microwave but i shake them thoroughly and test before giving them to her, plus it's how I did it with my son and my mum did it with all 6 of her kids so judge away. Just keep unwelcome comments to yourself :) Thanks!).

A feed can only be kept for 2 hours after it's been mixed.

I do question the 'guidelines'sometimes. We use SMA Staydown and they have a different way to preparing - it MUST be completely cooled down, preferably refridgerated previouslyboiled water, otherwise it all clogs up in big lumps :S

i make mine at start of day and fridge them then warm it up. my mum did it this was and so far baby is fine

The guidelines are only guidelines...I follow the general rules but I work around what ever makes it easiest for me, as all mothers do!

DD is on SMA LF and seems to be really liking it but its a very smooth formula. With DS I found SMA HB was SUPER thick and clumped up unless using hot water. C&G Comfort has little gel bits in it and always blocked the teats :( DD struggled to feed on it and I was having to pull the bottle away every few mins to get a gel thing out the bloody teat lol.

Everyone has their own methods...it's nice people can pick up tips on how to make life easier and more convienient for themselves :)

Sid has 6oz bottles at the mo so i make up a days worth at night to 4ozs and then when he starts to get hungry i boil the kettle, add the 2ozs, add the powder and serve :flower:

I do this too when I'm at home. So quick! Eve has 7oz bottles, so I fill all the bottles for the day to 5.5oz and keep at room temp. When Eve wants feeding I add 1.5oz freshly boiled water then add 7 scoops and it's perfect temperature!

If I'm out and about I either use cartons or add powder to a room temp bottle of water.

I used to pre-prepare all the bottles and store them in the fridge but they take a lot longer to heat up, and if I wanted to go out I didn't feel comfortable taking one with me and keeping it cold until she wanted it. Also, when I'd boil the kettle and let the water cool down a little before adding the powder, I kept forgetting about it and then the water would be to cool to add to kill any bacteria! (needs to be hot if pre-preparing)

Was too stressful, so changed methods and am much happier now..

Do what works best for you. :flower:

formula isn't sterile; which is why it's recommended to add to boiled water no less than 30 mins old so that it kills the bacteria in the formula. adding formula to cold water doesnt kill the 'dodgy' bacteria in the formula.

i make up all the bottles i need in the morning by boiling the water, sterlising the bottles, then pour out the correct amount of pre-boiled water - still hot - adding the formula then fast cooling it in a couple of bowls of cold water before popping it in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

a lot of mum's make it differently and it's best to see what works for you. :) i only do the above as it seemed to make sense to me.
