may soundd like a stupid question but ive only just started making bottles as my daughter was fed ebm anyway in my 0 to 5years old book that my midwife gave me said this " make up the formula then cool it quick at the back of the fridge for an hour then if your going out put it in the coolbag for upto 4 hours and if you dont use it within for hours put it bag in the firdge for 24 hours and warm up for no longer than 15 minutes"

firstly i make my bottles with boiling water straight from the kettle then cool in cold water. so can i make it boiling then put it straight in bag of the fridge or will that cause germ problems? as i know u dont put warm food in the fridge.

also it says dont warm for lnger than 15 mins what does that even mean? it doesnt take 15 mins to warm?

also if you do what i just said above does that not mean 28 hours which is a long time for the milk to be made for?? thank u i have so far made them as i go but it apears im not cut out for this formula making stuff as now i want to make maybe 2 bottles in advance? :dohh: hmm my hv told me not to though..

I always put them straight in the fridge after making them. Never had any problems. We used to take them out in the insulated bag too. I never timed it but i dont think it was ever more than 4 hours.

The 15 minutes thing, i think they mean if youve heated it up, use within 15 minutes.

We just used to make a whole days worth of bottles and put them in the fridge and warm them when we needed them.

Noooooooo

Don't ever put anything hot in the fridge. It raises the temperature inside the fridge, which puts EVERYTHING inside at risk of going bad. Stick bottles in cold water to get them more or less down to room temp before putting in the fridge.

I agree. Put the bottles in a basin of cold water to cool for 10-15 mins to avoid damaging the fridge. x

NEVER EVER put anything warm or hot in the fridge that goes with food, bottles anything, bacteria will grow inside the item, it MUST be cooled water.

I make up my bottles, let them cool then put them in the fridge and if Its time for a feed say in an hr, I will take one bottle out so it can get to room temperature just makes heating up quicker, then warm it up in the bottle warmer then add my formula and then feed my princess!

ok thanks every one i didnt do it!! lol also the thing about leaving it too cool itself is. u only have 2 hours before u have to dump it.. so if it calls for say half an hour u put it in the fridge then when u get it back out u only have 1 and half hours? im so stupid with all this lol . i have been cooling it under the tap in a bowl of cold water :)

yes i was just going to add that its very dangerous, i mean when i tried to cool something hot by putting it in the fridge when i was pregnant, i was violently ill with colic and stomach pain so for formula? i have never done that. I would let it cool in a jug of ice cold water or my midwife said I could let it cool on its own especially if my little girl is going to be eating within fifteen minutes so it will be fresh for her, otherwise we pop it in the fridge when its cooled down never when its hot, its dangerous for germs and a breeding ground for bacteria so yeah let them cool first :D or if u are in the states i think you can use cartons of pre made formula, i wish we had access to them in new zealand, in the hospitals they have pre made bottles of formula for 90ml feeds but you cannot buy them

I make it with boiling water, then put it in a pot of cold water and dump a load of ice into it. Once it's cool, it goes into the back of the fridge or she gets it straight away.

I cool bottle in cold water and use within 2 hours. You can buy ready made formula which u can store in fridge after decanting fir 24 or 48 hours depending on size of bottle you buy. I use these for night feeds then throw away excess so I dont have to get out of bed.

hi :) thank u for explaining i did think that but i wasnt sure. and they sell them here :) in 220mls i think 7 ounces cartons. i wil use the cartons at night i think :)

The sma ready to usecomes in 200ml bottles. U can buyteats in steilised wrapper touse straight away. After firstuse u can resterilise. The teat screws straight on to sma bottle sou dont have to decant.

I used to make bottles with boiling water then put in a bowl of ice cold water and put the job lot in the fridge to save remembering to check on it in x amount of minutes to then transfer into the fridge. It worked well for us.
