I'm baking a chocolate cake but the only sugar I have in the cupboard is castor, icing and soft brown..... the recipe says use muskavado sugar and golden castor....

Can I use just castor sugar? Or castor and soft brown sugar? Or do I have to go out and buy some posh stuff?

Thanks very much ladies... :flower:

You could probs use the caster and the light brown. Muscavdao gives a more treacly, deep flavour (still has molasses!) and golden caster a slight caramel flavour.

I do, unless it's a really specific recipe x

You should be fine mixing the caster and soft brown sugar - it will sort of replicate the golden caster. It really depends on what sort of cake you're making. If it's a chocolate cake it shouldn't make too much of a difference

Thanks ladies. I'll bake a tester tomorrow....I'll let you know how it turns out :) xxx

Use whatever! I always improvise and it works out fine. I have used icing sugar on many occasions when all else has run out.

I always use caster sugar for my chocolate cake. I also use mayonnaise, it's my secret ingredient :)
