From my own experience I'd recommend the Medela Swing - I pump once a day and think it's great.
I bought a manual pump at first (Avent) and found I never got more than 20 mls out per pumping session so that didn't work out for me, but I know there are occasional expressing mummies out there who have found a manual pump works just fine for them.
I think breast pumps are one of those things that even if you only plan on using occasionally you may as well get a good one. If you do need to use it, for top ups or to up your supply they can be a life saver. When I was pregnant I thought I'd get a cheap manual pump to only use occasionally but it nearly ripped my nipples off when I tried it and had to buy the Medela anyway.
When buying a pump have a look at the cups and see if it would fit your breast well. The soft cup in the Medela is good as it moulds to the breast shape and accommodates my 38F's well.
I hated the Tomme Tippee manuel pump the Advent manual was a little better but an electric was definitely better. I only use mine occasionally so I got the medela mini electric
Medela Single Mini
and I'm really happy with it. It does make a loud noise though and hubby always feels the need to moo at me when I turn it on.
My Oh reckoned the Swing sounded like the pump you get with fish tanks
I was going to get the mini electric, the swing is pretty good though. I got mine second hand from ebay for about £50 and got new parts for it from express yourself mums. I also use rechargeable batteries (if not plugging it in e.g. if i've taken it to work) as i found it eats them fast!
I thought I'd only use it occasionally when pregnant, I got a TT manual one then. But I've only used that a few times and it was only useful when I was engorged or leaking at night, otherwise I wouldnt get anything out of it. When I got the swing I started expressing every night after he'd gone to bed, to build up a freezer stash.
