Hi ladies.....I am a bit worried about using too much tums. I have crazy heartburn after I eat and TUMS is the only thing that seems to help. I have tried drinking milk as alternative, but that just makes it worse. I am really just scared that I am going to overdose on calcium. :nope: Is this even possible?

Gaviscon is better, you should take it 3 times a day and then if you feel worse at night. You won't do any harm to the baby with tums asaik but go to your doctor and tell them about your heartburn.

My doctor actually suggested Tums as a good way to beat heartburn and get my calcium at the same time (I don't eat dairy though so need more than most people). Just make sure you don't exceed the maximum amount the bottle tells you. I don't think you can overdose on calcium since it's not fat soluble.

My doctor 100% recommends tums. She says they wont cause any harm to baby. Just follow the instructions on the back for pregnant women. My bottle says up to 5 a day. With my first I had heart burn from 20 weeks till the day I delivered and some days was taking the max. She is 100% healthy and it never caused her any harm.

Thank you so much ladies! I was so worried there for a minute!

My doc says tums are fine but they don't work for me. He told me that zantac is safe as well and it works wonders

it's fine to take tums.....just pay attention to the amount to not exceed, and you can not over dose on calcium

I will admit that with my first pregnancy as well as this one I did go over the recommended amount for pregnant women. It has caused no problems with either and my dr said it wouldn't BUT I now take Pepcid instead. I usually only have to take 1 MAYBE 2 day. Usually just the one before bed and maybe 1 tums during the day. I have found this to help me out a lot! Hope it gets better... I have awful heartburn to and it is no fun at all!

My OBGYN actually prescribed 4 tums a day (2 morning, 2 evening) along with the prenatal vitamins on the info sheet she gave me at the first prenatal appointment.

I think she was mainly concerned about the calcium at first, and I'm not usually taking the morning tums, but I do the evening tums most nights (to prevent waking up in the middle of the night with heartburn)

my dr actually told me up to 10 a day is ok if necessary... tums is very safe...its a lot of the other treatments that can hurt the baby as they have aluminum and things of that nature in them!

I think that if it wasn't safe then it would state it on tums, gaviscon rennies etc etc. I was also worried that I was taking too many rennies - like 8 a day - where the max you can take is 16. It did say on the packaging - for continual use please refer to your doctor - so I did. He recommended gaviscon 3 x a day topped up with rennie on a need - to - have it basis. I have to say gaviscon seems to work better than rennies - as I can go for longer periods of time and not need anything - best of luck we are all in the same boat xxxxxxx (i wondered how pregnant women got on when there was no medication) xxxxxxxx

tums havent been doing anything for me, my heartburn is really ferocious, but the pharmacist looked up and found a safe antactid that is okay to take in 3rd tri and it has been a lifesaver!!! haven't even had to bust open the newest bottle of tums and can actually fall asleep at night now, it's fantastic!!!
***heartburn super sucks!!****

My doctor told me to take tums for heartburn and just not go over the max dosage each day. I keep a huge bottle of them in my purse because I get heartburn so often. :haha: Had to do the same for my first two as well.

hopefully not! because i eat Tums like it's my job. if don't take tums every day i literally will puke because of how bad the heartburn is

I take a 15mg prevacid everyday and tums. The last week as been crazy with heartburn!

I take tums as soon as i feel my heartburn coming on! I keep a bottle in the kitchen, one upstairs on my nightstand and one in my purse :)

I wondered the same too, like maybe they had natural remedies for it or something.
