Hello

This has probably been asked a thousand times before, but can you overfeed a FF baby? My HV and Midwives say no, but he is eating soooo much.

He is 3 weeks and one day old, and is guzzling 6oz a feed most of the time. He then sleeps for 3 hours ish. Sometimes he will have 4, then we wait and he just screams for more. We try other things, but it is quite obvious it is food he wants and he doesn't stop till he gets it.

He was 9lb and half an oz when born

I need to take him to be weighed this week, last week he was 10lb 5oz, he id definately heavier now...

I am worried he is going to be enormous!!

Hi hun, no you cant over feed a baby, he will get sick & throw up the extra. If he's keeping it in his stomach & happy with it, offer him what he wants. Dont worry about weight gain at this age, it settles when they'r older & more mobile xx

I was wondering the same thing since my LO has already eaten 30 ozs today (since midnight) and it's only 7 pm! I agree with the PP that our LOs wouldn't eat the extra ounces or would spit up the excess if it were too much for them. :)

I dont know if EBM is less calorific byt my LO is on EBM and FF, and normally has about 40oz in 24hrs accompanied by weight gain! HV was not worried at her last weigh in:winkwink:

As long as you're feeding on demand, you can't overfeed a FF baby unless they have a medical issue. I think some babies with reflux want to constantly drink milk to ease the pain but that would be rare and you'd certainly notice worse symptoms first.

I guess if you were feeding to a schedule you'd set with a certain number of ounces at set times, you could be overfeeding by insisting that they finish the bottle but if it was overfeeding by much, as others have said, LO would just bring it back up. You could maybe take them to the point where they literally can't fit another drop in though, which it probably isn't a good idea to do - I know how uncomfortable it is for me when I'm stuffed!

no your not over feeding him. sophia was on 5oz every 3 hours at 3 weeks and is now on 6ozs every 4 hours. all babies are different xx
