Can you take annual leave instead of sickness?

My husband fell into the corner of our glass dining table and has hurt his ribs and also winded himself. He has been taking painkillers regularly but is still in a lot of pain.

He went in work today.. He has a manual job that involves a lot of heavy lifting so he asked his manager if he could do a different job for a while until the pain eases off. His manager said that there was nothing else OH could do and told him to try his normal job.

Hubby tried his normal job but the pain got worse so his manager sent him home and told him to go and see the doctor and get a sick note.

The trouble is that hubby doesn't get company sick pay and we really can't afford to lose his wages and SSP is only around £80 per week.

I've told hubby to ring up his manager tomorrow and request that he has this week as annual leave.. I was just wandering what the chances are of them agreeing to this?

the company i work for did not let me to take an annual leave for sick time off

I always thought annual leave couldn't be used. My mum works for a building society and they don't allow it, I work for a university and it isn't allowed also. I can almost imagine it being employment law to protect employees from being pressured from using annual leave when ill but I could be wrong.

I don't know how sickness leave works, does his employer not even do a week? What if he was to get a bug? You can sign yourself off for 7 days so I'm assuming by law if he has a contract he has to be paid then??

Hope he's ok that sounds horrid.

He has spoken to his employer this morning and they have let him have this week as annual leave thank god!

Unfortunately they don't pay him for being off sick.. If he was off for a week or more he could claim SSP but that's only £80 odd a week x

If he was off for only a week he would not get SSP for first three days as these are waiting days unfortunately, so if he works a 5 day week he would only get 2/5ths of 86.70 pounds which is peanuts really. Not sure if you would be entitled to any other help.

Sick pay is a bit of a joke really and unfortunately many struggle and feel forced back to work because they cannot manage financially.

I hope he has a speedy recovery.

He has unfortunately had a set back today, was hoping he would be well enough to return on Monday but that's not looking very likely now.

Ended up having to phone an ambulance for him at lunch time because he coughed and then screamed with pain, couldn't breathe and couldn't move. I thought he had punctured a lung but turns out he has caused muscular damage through coughing and can't move properly. The doctor at the hospital reckons OH is going to be off work for at least 2 weeks but could be off for upto 6 weeks.

Really panicking about the bills now :(

Oh I'm really sorry hun, sounds so niave but I really thought in this country we were better looked after in these scenarios. I really hope he feels well soon especially because that sounds horrible :flower:

Thanks hun.. The hospital have given him some anti inflamatories and strong painkillers so hopefully taking them regularly will control the pain. I think I'm just best off taking things day by day at the moment or I'm going to drive myself nuts worrying about money x
