My little girl is almost 4 years old.

She cannot stand on 1 leg for more than a split second (3-5 seconds is the expectation) or hop.
Can most/all 4 year olds do this?

Her other gross motor skills came a little late but quite easily with some focus, but so far not this.

I ask because now , due to the fact i had a difficult delivery ( eclampsia) this not hopping thing is starting to lead us towards some invasive tests and investigations.....i'm just curious to know if others also struggle with it.

I will check when he's home from preschool but I don't think my boy can. He's always been a bit behind physically. He didn't walk til he was al ost 23 months. I will check and come back at some point today and confirm. He's 3 years 9 months old.

I've just asked Rio to try. He's slightly younger but he can't. He's only just in the last few months learnt to jump with two feet too, I was concerned about that but it came. X

Ella has been able to hop for about 6 months now (so about 2.5) and hops across our living room abd back without putting her foot down. She can stand on one leg but wobbles about after a few seconds x

It's not very graceful, but yes, she can hop, not sure about standing for 3-5 seconds though, but she definitely does try to stand on one leg. She'll be 4 in February. But it's really only been fairly recently, last few months maybe, so I don't think that sounds too unusual all other things being fine.

My boy is 3 yrs 5 mths and he can't yet, he was a bit later at jumping so know this will come too

My dd is 3 years 6 months and has been able to hop on one leg for a while. She can hop on one leg across the living room. I just asked her to stand on one leg and she was able to stand while I counted to 8.

I just asked her and she can. I don't see her do it very often though.

My boy is 3 and half he can hop but very well and can't really stand on one leg

My son can barely do it at 4 and a half... Definitely not while he was 3. He's turning 5 in a few months! I guess he was a little late with this milestone. His balance on one foot is awful. He can hop but not well.

This has been really reassuring - thank you.
I had a feeling that , as milestones go, it might be one lots of children struggle with.

I suppose the difference migjt be that most almost 4 year olds would be standing on 1 leg quite easily with a little focus and that just isn't happening for us....yet :)

DD (3.5) can just about hop (like 2-3 times before falling over) but not stand on one leg without falling over.

What kinds of invasive tests do they want to do? My lo can't really hop on one leg and he's four and a half.

Sophie I have never seen hop. I have just asked her to and she did two hops then sorta fell over.

My almost 5-yr old can't really hop on one foot. I'm not sure he even gets off the ground 😋.

I forgot to report back! So my 3.9 year old can stand for a few seconds on one leg but most definitely can't hop!

That's interesting for most kids balancing on 1 leg is a pre-requisite to hopping.

Thanks, it seems to be reasonably varied. I think even 2 or 3 wobbly hops count - my little girl wouldn't be able to stand on 1 leg to try nor get it up off the ground.

Balance wise she still prefers to hold on to climb stairs (sort of using arm strength to pull) and she needs to sit down to put on underwear/ trousers.

She's had delays with most of her gross motor but got there. She was a late talker but with work is on track now.

Indy can only just jump and she'll be 5 in February. She has gross motor delay.

At 4 Thomas couldn't do either but now at 5 he has started to do them but is still quite wobbly.
