Well I think it really depend on the Dr. If you have a sap of a OB then you can usually get them to do one if you are worried (I convinced my Ob, now retired, to give me one before I moved to the NWT at 6 weeks, had to wait with all my others). But most that I have known won't until 12 weeks. Only reason I am getting an early on is because of a suspected ectopic and they just want to make sure babe in the uterus is all.

I didn't realize that they don't scan early here. I had my first scan at 6w today, but that's because I got pregnant off of an unmonitored round of Clomid and my OB suddenly wondered if it could be twins (it's not!).

My OH did mention that when he and his ex had his son, they had to pay for all scans after the second one. Does anyone know if that's true in Ontario? I'd be willing to pay, as long as I could do one to put my mind at ease!

I believe that was probably because they went to a private clinic for a 4D ultra sound. I know that I can go to Winnipeg to get one but I have to pay for it unless my Dr sends me.

Interesting about the scan issues... Maybe it depends on the exact concern, but I had no trouble getting a scan when I was experiencing some light bleeding at 8 1/2 weeks last time--actually went in the very same day to a walk in clinic that does them. And then when it turned out the baby hadn't been developing on schedule I had two more to confirm the MMC over the next two weeks.

I called my midwife after a tiny bleed at 6 weeks this time around, and she said she'd arrange an ultrasound for me if I wanted one, but talked me down on the basis that it was unlikely they'd see enough to really tell if things were okay anyway. I'm planning on asking them to schedule one for approximately 8 weeks when I see her tomorrow, even though the spotting's stopped, just to check in, and don't anticipate it being a problem. When I saw my GP at 5 weeks, before I had the midwife appointment and before any spotting, *he* suggested to *me* that I should get an early scan to ease any worries considering what happened last time.

Maybe it's because there are so many clinics here in TO, it's easy to get in, so they're not worried about too many bookings?

Sorsha, could be. When I had bleeding in my last 2 previous pregnancies they got me in right away the next morning, so I think they do them in "emergency" or "urgent" type situations.

Sorry to hear about the bleeding this time around. Fingers crossed things normalize again very soon and you can start enjoying your pregnancy a little more!

Is it now a Canadian wide thing to be able to get a midwife? I had hospital deliveries with my other four, but wished my fourth was a home birth, but didn't even know if there was such a thing. I wanted to do it with my loss cycle, but was told then that becuase I have heart palpitations (even with the cardiologist saying there is no worries at all) that I wasn't eligible for a midwife. Still thinking of doing a hypnobirth though.
