Can't sterilize nutramigen powder?

As everyone knows according to WHO you must make the formula up in water that's about 70 degrees to kill bacteria in the formula...

Well nutramigen has enflora in it a probiotic..

The can says "do not warm".

Soooo what... you just don't sterilize the nutramigen.. or the probiotics are totally pointless?? or what... ?

I think they are going the basis that the benefit of your baby being on that particular formula out-weighs the risk of them getting ill from not mixing it with hot water. Its the same with SMA staydown as it has to be made with fridge-cold cooled, boiled water. xx

My LO is on nutramigen too. We've had to just sterilise bottles and put boiling water into them. Then we just add the powder when he wants a bottle and warm it up a bit. He hasnt been ill and i just make sure that i do everything else properly like sterilising the bottles etc.

As long as you give it as soon as it's made up and any unused discarded within 2hrs the risk is reduced hun. As a pp said the benefits of making that particular formula up in this was outweighs the risks xx

Oh okay good.

I just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything.. I've been making them room temp (sterilized, boiled and cooled) for about a week now and alls well!!

Question..

When you first switched your LO's to it did they poop constantly... like CONSTANTLY?

CONSTANTLY did my son poop. Haha my son was switched from regular formula, to Gentlease, then to Nutramigen for what the doctor's figured was milk protien allergy, the Nutramigen is supposed to be easier to digest, and so it would make sense for them to poop more often.

So yeah, stock up on diapers lol My son pretty much pooped after every bottle.

Ahhhhhh yea no fun!!!

There started to be blood in it and pure mucous, and she started losing her appetite. 4 oz ever 8-10 hours sometimes.!

We had to take her Children's, since at the time she was only on it a week and a day they said it may either be 1) the dairy and soy proteins clearing out or 2) her allergies are severe and she may need neocate.

Seems to have gotten a little better since than so we shall see!!!!

Hoping we don't need neocate.. such a pain!

its wat it says on the tin! this thread has confused me!

I'm confused too lol - OP, are you in the US? Holly is on Nutramigen AA and the label on the tin says to make with 70 degree water. I know in the US the making up instructions are different. x x

Strange that even the SAME company has different instructions in different areas...

Here's the instructions on my tin..

Ask your baby's doctor about the need to use cooled boiled water for mixing and the need to boil clean utensils, bottles and nipples in water before use.

1) Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before preparing infant formula.
2) Pour desired amt. of water into the bottle; add powder
3) Cap bottle and shake well


1 scoop (9g) per. 2 fl. oz. water


That's about what all formulas say except the amino acid based in which you'd use 1 scoop per each ounce of water.

EdIT - it also says on bottom..

WARNING: Do not warm. Warming may limit benefits of LGG. (probiotic)

Yep, mine are totally different, I think the labels are printed to follow each country's guidelines. It is imported from the US but the box is labelled for the UK market. We have different rules for making up formula here, the only one I know is made up differently is SMA staydown.

I just looked at the enfamil website, and I think the formula with LGG is a different formula to the Nutramigen lipil 1 that gets prescribed in the UK. The LGG one is by enfamil and the other is mead johnson (who I'm guessing are part of the same company). No Nutramigen AA contains LGG, but the US website instructions are the same as yours apart from the do not warm bit.

Clear as mud eh

So, I think it's best to follow the instructions on the tin as it does seem that hot water would 'kill' the probiotics. Anna1986, you're making it up right, don't worry! x x

Here it means water that has been boiled to sterilize it and than cooled to room temp. the heat kills the probiotics so we can't have it much over room temp at all.

Confusing!!!

Oh and Saphire1 - Mead Johnson is the father company, enfamil is created and owned by them so same thing!!!

Just, simply that different countries do different things and marketing knows that!
