My husband is Captain in the Army. Our first son has his name..would it be too weird to name our next son Captain? DH says lots of people are naming their kids way more unique names so it won't be weird at all...I'm a little on the fence. I want him to have a unique name but not strange....

Thoughts and please be kind...:flower:

Oooh that's a tough one! I is definitely too "out there" for me, and for where I live, but if I lived somewhere where unusual names are more accepted and more the norm I'd be more inclined to say go for it. It is nice to have a name that has meaning for you, and it is nice that he would be named after your DH in a way, like his older brother. I guess I'd say if you think you can get away with it and he isn't likely to get teased then go for it! I love the name Fox for a boy but it is too unusual for where we live and for where our children will go to school, so I can't use it, but if we lived somewhere where it wouldn't be deemed so unusual I'd totally push for it!

Way too 'out there' for my taste, plus he will forever be Captain (Last Name) and people might think he's being funny every time he introduces himself.

I'm usually a fan of traditional spellings but if you went with Captain I'd probably try to mix up the spelling, like Kaptan or Capten. Those look more like names to me rather than a title.

I would say no, in my opinion it does not seem like a first name... only a title. I just don't think it would be taken seriously. Like imagine a resume that says "Captain Evans" (or whatever your surname is)... I think it would seem like a joke. Especially as a kid, and other kids will tease him. Perhaps look for another special connection to your husband - his middle name, or his best friend from the army, or a special relative of his, etc.

I'm sorry I'd have to say no, not a good idea. I knew a German shepherd dog called captain!!

I would avoid it, in all honestly, and im quite open about names

Eleanor we do live in a big city with lots of unique names.

Stara good point that people maybe not take him seriously when he introduced himself. He would prob go by nickname of Cap. So he may use that as an introduction and I thought if he really hated it he could always go by whatever middle name we give him.

Ruby my husband doesn't have a middle name and since he is the III his father and grandfather have the same name :dohh:

But I thank you for all of your honest opinions. :flower:I am leaning more towards no just wanted to get some outside opinions on the name.

What if he too became a captain in the army....."Captain Captain Surname" ..... Slim possibility maybe, but still!

They only use last names in the military LOL so it would be Captain Surname like my husband

I am currently watching a TV series where there is a guy named "Major" as far as i am concerned, It isn't that far out there, and WAY better than some names I have heard.

Is there a name that means captain? I think Captain as a name is just too out there, and I'm very open to unique names. Cap is a cute nn though. What about Kaplan, or Capari...something unusual still using Cap as a MN and not a title. Captain Surname sounds like a huge teasing opportunity. ..

It's not my cup of tea. I guess it depends on your lifestyle, where you live, schools etc and your DSs name:

I also think you have to think about these babies as adults - writing cvs - getting jobs etc...

I don't think it's totally unusable and it's not too different to a lot of other modern names- I've heard of Sailor being used on this board- but as a name I really hate it, sorry!

I'd have to give a no to Captain as a first name. I just wouldn't be able to take it seriously if I met someone called Captain. I like the suggestion by PP that you find a name that means Captain, but isn't Captain.

Interestingly, I don't think you could even legally name a child Captain in New Zealand. We have a law forbidding the use of titles as names. So you couldn't call a kid Duke or Judge or anything like that. I imagine that Captain might be on that list!
